What Is The Paleo Diet And How Does It Work?

If you’re in just a tiny bit into health and nutrition, you’ve probably heard about the paleo diet. Or maybe you read that a celebrity endorses it. Either way, you’ve heard about it and now you want to find out more.

The paleo diet essentially means that we eat like we did back when we were primitive’s.

In other words, when we were nothing more than cave man and cave woman.

Seriously.

Back in those days, people ate whatever they hunted or foraged, such as fish, meat, leafy greens, as well as seeds.

This meant that the likes of candy and cereal were out.

Cave men and women didn’t have to worry about counting calories like you and I do. They didn’t have to carefully check the back of each packet of potato chips they bought to make sure they weren’t gonna be consuming more calories than their diet recommended.

Removing certain foods from your diet means you don’t need to worry about counting calories ever again. Yay!

I’d like to be able to recommend a specific diet that lets you eat until you’re full without having to count any calories at all. This diet would also help you build muscle while losing weight and getting in shape.

But it sounds too much like a gimmick, right? It sounds like something you’d find advertised in a magazine before it’s replaced with another, even better diet in next month’s issue.

But the thing is, it’s not a gimmick. It’s the paleo diet – and it works.

But how does it work?

Okay, yes, the paleo diet is yet another diet. It’s probably like the millionth you’ve come across in the last five years. It has a funny name, too, which means that it must be a marketing ploy, a fad.

But actually, the paleo diet is totally legit.

Before the likes of Coke and McDonald’s butted in, our ancient ancestors enjoyed a paleo diet which didn’t give them type 2 diabetes or depression like our sugar-rich diets do today.

And you know what? Although fast food companies would prefer you didn’t know this, but our genetics haven’t actually changed all that much since the halcyon days of the cave. They’re pretty much still the same, which means that what worked back then will work today.

Think about it. The average Homo Sapien in 30,000BC was tall, athletic and muscular. He or she was also versatile and agile.

Contrast that with the average American Homo Sapien today, who is badly out of shape, depressed, stressed and sleep deprived. Moreover, he or she is at severe risk of developing diabetes, and gets angry when he or she doesn’t get their morning coffee.

What had to happen for these changes to occur?

Agriculture!

Eventually, humans discovered a little something called farming, which would change the way we ate forever. Hunter-gatherers became farmers, settled down, started families and even began to read books and muse about the cosmos and everything in it.

What a transformation!

While discovering how to split the atom was definitely progress, filling our body’s with food that isn’t actually right for it, such as farmed grains, is not. This is because our body’s never evolved so that they can receive these types of foods, and have therefore not adjusted.

The hunter-gatherer cave man got REALLY good at hunting and gathering. He spent a LONG time perfecting his art, and as such his body evolved in such a way that it was tailor made for the foods he was giving it.

Then, McDonald’s and the like came along and decided they would suddenly try to force into our body’s a new type of food. The result has been obesity, heart conditions and diabetes.

This is because we spent thousands and thousands of years adapting to the paleo diet, only to be violently shaken from it. We were not ready, and we’re still not ready.

Instead of getting our fill of meat, fruit and vegetables, we’re instead dependent upon grains and candy, such as bread and lollipops.

And to exacerbate the problem, the U.S. government tells its citizens to double down on grains and get at least 11 servings each day.

The result? More weight gain.

The paleo diet keeps things real. It is here to restore our optimal health and make us the best we can be by freeing us from the illusion that fast food and pizza is not only cool, but somehow the best choice.

Why Are Grains So Bad?

Your ancient ancestor didn’t eat grains and he did just fine. He didn’t have diabetes or a heart condition and you know what? He was happier because of it! He didn’t have gout or indigestion, and was able to complete his chores without needing to lie down and rest his bad foot or aching stomach.

Grains are not good for your system. Being composed of carbs that turn into glucose which is then converted to energy sounds all well and good, but an glucose that isn’t turned into energy is stashed away as fat. And that isn’t cool.

Grains also contain lectins and gluten, which you may have already heard of. Many people are now gluten-intolerant, which means that might have nasty symptoms such as acid reflux, joint pains, and even reproductive issues.

Lectins, meanwhile, don’t want you to eat them so much that they find ways to resist being digested. They hate us eating them to the extent that they stop our gastrointestinal tract from functioning properly.

In conclusion, the paleo diet is not easy to get into. There will be certain foods which you find hard to give up, or maybe you just don’t have the sort of cash needed for a paleo diet right now.

That’s fine. Switching to a new diet is never easy, and we recommend that you take small steps at a time. Making small changes, such as switching rice for vegetables, is a good idea. Small changes, after all, are better than no changes.
