Selena Gomez Weight Loss Diet and Workout Plan
Selena Gomez is a Queen. She’s always been a Queen (even after appearing in controversial movie Spring Breakers, which – reportedly caused our girl to break down on set), and like all Queens that we at Beauty and Tips admire, she’s done something that inspires us.
As well as being an amazing actress and human being, Selena Gomez managed to shed some serious poundage, so that she’s at a weight she loves. She’s never looked better!
The thing is, there was a time when she was the target of Internet hate trolls because, as these trolls decreed, she didn’t look her best when she was snapped on a Mexican beach in 2015. Since then, she’s lost weight and now looks AMAZING.
How did she do it?
In this article, Beauty and Tips reveals the workings of the Selena Gomez weight loss diet and workout plan. Especially if you’re her size, this diet and workout plan is almost guaranteed to work.
Why Did Selena Gomez Decide To Lose Weight?
“Selena Gomez has never been fat!” you cry. “I don’t get it. Why did she even decide to lose weight in the first place?”
Of course, you’re right. Selena has never been what we’d call fat, but there was a time when she wasn’t as toned and slender as she wanted to be.
It all came to a head in 2015 when her Instagram pics showed her flaunting her curves on a sunny Mexican beach.
The thing is that Internet trolls didn’t take too kindly to these pics. To them, she looked chubbier than she used to do back in her Disney days – and they were going to let her know.
So, did trolls really make Selena lose weight? Did she cave to the obnoxious ramblings of people she’ll never meet?
Selena was already aware that her diet was getting out of hand. It wasn’t healthy and it was causing weight gain. Something had to change and the pics made her realise that.
Then there was the fact that her anxiety and depression was getting worse. In fact, things had gotten to be so bad that she had developed lupus as a result of her mental health problems.
In turn, this caused her to indulge in some serious emotional eating. Physically and mentally she was out of shape. And although those trolls had no manners, what they were in essence saying rang true to Selena – she had let her standards slip.
But, hey, it isn’t easy for someone in Selena’s position. Any singer who tours the world can easily get exhausted and mentally weary. That kind of life is taxing, especially for young women.
So how did she get back on her feet? How did she bounce back? Let’s take a look at what she ate.
The Selena Gomez Weight Loss Diet
Selena spent an entire year working on her diet to get back into the shape she knew she deserved.
Now, we will stipulate that Selena had professionals on hand helping her out. For example, she had Amy Rosoff Davis to help her make better food choices. But although you can’t hire Ms Davis to walk around the supermarket with you, there are lots you can learn from what she taught Selena.
Here is the general meal plan that Selena stuck to most days:
- Breakfast – scrambled egg burritos (right?!) with beans, avocado, rice and chorizo. Selena would alternate it with either a full-fat Greek yogurt or Granola.
- Lunch – Turkey breast with avocado and beans. This meal would be topped with lemon juice, red wine vinegar and olive oil, as well as a dollop of Dijon mustard.
- Dinner – A teriyaki bowl made up of either salmon or Asian marinated chicken as the mains. Selena would flavour it with teriyaki sauce and include avocado and cucumber on the side. Some days she would go for sushi.
Selena would munch on snacks too, but often her “snack” was a freshly pressed juice made of carrot, ginger, kale and cucumber.
Here is what Ms Davis said about Selena’s diet:
“Last year on Selena’s revival tour, I made sure the dressing room always had veggies and protein and brown rice or whole grains.
“I made a lot of rice bowls with veggies, protein, and avocado for Selena. It helped give her energy and stamina, which she needed to get through her shows. I also made healthy chicken salad with grapes and celery—it quenched her thirst and the protein filled her up. We always drank lots of water and had green tea when we needed a pick me up—it sure was exhausting at times.”
What can we learn from Selena Gomez’s diet here? Whole foods are awesome. Also, so are organic foods.
Moreover, these healthy foods can taste awesome if you add the right (healthy) dressings. In this case, Selena used a dressing consisting of Dijon mustard, red wine vinegar, lemon juice and olive oil.
What other foods should you be eating to lose weight?

There are also lots of foods that Selena avoided, too. Let’s look at this more closely…
List of foods to avoid:
- Ketchup and sauces
- Prepackaged pasta
- High fat salad dressing
- Processed meat (salami, sausage and so on)
- Ready to eat foods
- Cold cuts of meat
- Packaged soup
- White bread
- Milk chocolate
- Canned foods
- Energy drinks
- Packaged vegetable and fruit juice
- Alcohol (not too much at least)
- Salted nuts
Selena also drank lots of water and she slept more. Water is needed to improve how you function and sleeping just 30 minutes more than you currently do can be a big help.
As well as eating the right things and fixing her diet, Selena also worked out.
Selena’s Work Out Regime
Amy worked extensively on Selena’s workout regime, saying:
“If you keep your same-old routine, you will most likely get bored and wind up skipping the gym. Working out should be a part of your lifestyle, not an obligation or burden. Make your workouts fun by keeping it fresh and doing something different each day.
Selena and I do everything from Pilates to hiking to dance cardio to circuit training to yoga and spinning—the list goes on. But no matter what the workout is, we always make time to stretch. It keeps your muscles long and lean, improves your performance, helps your joints, and enables your muscles to work to their best ability. Also, it feels really good.”
Here’s what Selena did each day – and what you need to do, too:
Warm up first. Jog on the spot, then go for a jog. Follow this with lunges, jumping jacks and squats. Then stretch,
Start with a warm up and then proceed into jumping jacks. Then do some pushup’s, some crunches, some squats and some lunges. End with a stretch.
Start with a warm up and then engage in some circuit training.
Warm up and then do some pilates.
This is a rest day.
Take it easy today with a warm up followed by yoga and some simple meditation.
This is another rest day. Give your body and muscles a chance to recuperate before starting all over again tomorrow.
Keep it up. Remember that staying fit, eating well and taking good care of yourself are all the same thing. It’s all about self-care and loving yourself. If you love yourself, you’ll treat yourself well. And you’ll be a lot happier for it.
Here are some final tips that Amy had Selena implement:
Selena Didn’t Weigh Herself
Amy Rosoff wouldn’t let Selena weigh herself, saying that she doesn’t believe in scales.
“I just don’t think it’s healthy.”
For anyone reading this who LOVES food, this is an amazing statement to hear from a weight loss coach of all people. She adds:
“But ultimately, the body that eats well and works is going to look better because it’s healthy.”
The idea is that, as long as you make the right food choices, there’s no need to obsess over the scales because you’ll know that you’re making the right decisions and doing the right things. And that’s all that really matters.
Selena Didn’t Starve Herself
Selena ate. In fact, she ate quite well.
The problem some dieters have is they take things to the extreme. They starve themselves, wrongly believing that this is the best way to lose weight. It never works. All that happens is their metabolism slows down and their cells start to convert food into fat.
As a result, they don’t meet their weight loss goals anyway! Starving yourself can even lead to you gaining more weight.
“I want to live my life like a French person. I don’t believe in depriving yourself, but I do believe in moderation. Life is too short not to enjoy food.”
Eat well but control yourself. Remember the famous saying – all good things in moderation.
Selena Drank Lots of Water
Water is the most natural substance you can drink. It rehydrates you properly, flushes out nasty toxins from your body and helps you to maintain a healthy pH balance.
Aim to drink up to 3 litres of water each day – maybe even 4 if you can fit them in.
Selena Ate Whole Foods
The switch to whole foods was key for Selena. Before she made the switch, she was eating a LOT of bad stuff – candies, burgers, fries and fast food in general. Once Amy got involved, it wasn’t long before Selena had the whole food bug.
Amy said that Selena responded to her advice real fast and that it wasn’t hard to convince her to make the switch. Take a look at our list of foods up there, and add some to your next grocery list.
Selena Went Dancing
Selena is a performer who throws some shape on stage. This helps her to stay in shape.
If you’re not a performer, there’s no reason you can’t put on your dancing shoes and get moving, too!
All in all, losing weight and getting into shape is just a matter of loving yourself more. The more you love yourself, the better the choices you make will be.
