10 Little-Known Airport Tips and Hacks That Can Be Useful When You Travel

Does the idea of going to the airport make you feel a tad queasy? It’s not always a nice experience. In this article, Beauty and Tips aim to make it a bit easier with our top 10 airport hacks.

Before we go flying off on a holiday of a lifetime, we first of all have to get through the airport. For some of us, it can be a nightmare and it sets totally the wrong tone right from the start. Airports are crowded, noisy, stressful places and they can be a massive source of frustration for us all. And don’t even get us started on delays! Or lost luggage. Or slow moving people who won’t get out of the way when the gate is closing on your flight. To make sure that your next jaunt through an airport is a breeze, check out these 10 little-known airport tips and tricks.

Research Layover Airports Beforehand

If you fly frequently, you probably know your local airport like the back of your hand. Perhaps there are even one or two other airports in the world that you know very well. But what about those layover airports that catch us short? You know what we mean: you get there and can’t find the toilet or the food places. Before you know it, you’re so lost that you’re not even sure this is an airport anymore. It looks more like a mall! New airports can be scary places, and layover ones are the worst when you’re short on time and don’t know where you’re going. And if you have a tight connection, this is the last thing you need. Research layover airports beforehand, and download an app – such as GateGuru – to help you out once you’re there.

Sit in the Family Room

Provided you’ve actually got a family, it’s a good idea to take advantage of the family rooms at airports. Here, you can chill with your family, watch TV, use free Wi-Fi and have some downtime before the flight. They make perfect sense for families with kids who are otherwise over excited and nervous about the flight. Family rooms calm everyone down, and they also provide plenty of food, drink and snacks. Don’t miss out!

Use Trackers To Secure Luggage

Most of us tie a bow to our luggage to help us spot it when it comes out onto the conveyor belt at the end of a flight. But this can still cause us to miss our luggage. The easiest and fastest way to find your bags? Get a luggage tracker to keep track of them!

Pack Some Things Into A Shopping Bag

Isn’t the “one carry-on and one personal item” rule annoying? We hate it and we know we’re not the only ones. However, there’s a really cool way of getting around this rule. Either bring a plastic shopping bag to the airport with you, or pop into the duty free section and make a purchase. This could be something small, such as a bottle of water or a magazine. Make sure you get a plastic bag and then dump a few of your items in there. With any luck, the gate agents will assume you’ve just purchased some stuff for the plane and will let you on. Some won’t but it’s a chance you’ve got to take!

Sign up to a Loyalty Scheme

If you fly often, do yourself a HUGE favour by signing up to an airport loyalty scheme. This will reward you with lots of perks down the line, including faster check-in times.

Put Wearable Clothes At The Front of Your Luggage

One of the biggest niggles of airports comes during the luggage weighing process. You were SO sure that this time your bags wouldn’t be too heavy but, nope, there’s that awful bleeping noise again! Too bad. As it turns out, your luggage is overweight. One of neat airport tips that can save you a whole lot of hassle in this instance is to place wearable clothes at the top of your luggage that you can simply put on to keep your bags weight down. Simple and the problem is solved!

Find your Gate Right Away

What’s the first thing many of us do before finding our gate? We go for a beer! However, we’re then left a bit short when we realise just how far away our gate is! It’s a much better idea to locate your gate first and then go for a beer.

Weigh Bags At Home

One of the most annoying things about airports is the extra charges imposed whenever a bag weighs too much. A lot of the time it’s unexpected and can be a real hassle. However, there’s a simple solution to this: Weigh your bag at home so that you know how much it weighs. Compare it to the limit imposed by the airport and if you’re a little bit over, take something out. All good!

Buy a Portable Charger

Got a portable charger? Never thought about buying one before? A portable charger can be a literal lifesaver the next time you’re at the airport. Without one, you might struggle to find an open outlet, and if your battery is dying this could feel like life or death! Portable chargers are inexpensive and fantastic. They can also be used in-flight and they give you plenty of peace of mind before you fly out to a new destination.

Photo Your Parking Spot

When we return from our holiday, cold, wet and miserable because of the horrible weather and the fact that we have to go back to work tomorrow, we just want to get home ASAP. We want to get home to a warm fire, a cup of tea, a bath and OUR OWN BED. Unfortunately, not being able to find our car in the airport car park puts a stop to that pretty quickly! To make sure you don’t lose your car next time, take a picture of your parking spot before you fly out, so that it’s easy to find when you return. This little hack will save you so much hassle.
