10 Tips on how to update your wardrobe without breaking the bank
It can be difficult to update your wardrobe on a budget, but it’s not impossible and you don’t need to spend a fortune to revamp your wardrobe. With just a bit of reorganisation, some creative thinking and smart hoping, you can create a whole new look without clearing out your closet and starting all over. Here are ten great tips on how you can update your wardrobe without breaking the bank:
1. Get organised
The first move is to actually see what you already have in your wardrobe. Get everything out of the closets and drawers and you will probably find things that you’d forgotten about and haven’t worn for ages.
2. Mix and match
Once you’ve found all those long-lost items, you can now begin to create new outfits by mixing up the old. Put the items together that are similar colours and see how you can pair them differently to create new outfits, without spending a single penny.
3. Don’t throw out outdated clothes
Think long term, when you are sorting through your clothes. If an item is still in perfect condition, but a bit outdated, don’t throw away, put it aside for storage. It might be back in fashion next year or, in a few years more, you might be able to wear it as a part of your vintage look.
4. Swap with friends
Get a group of friends together and have a clothes and accessories swapping party. Why throw out perfectly good clothes when friends might love them? Whatever you do, don’t just throw them in the garbage; you can always donate them to charity or even sell them.
5. Make your own accessories
Take a second look at some of those garments and accessories that have assigned to the junk drawer. A strip of fabric from a skirt can soon be transformed into a scarf and old buttons, jewellery and beads can soon be turned into new accessories.
7. Wait for the sales
You’ve just missed Black Friday, but don’t despair, because sales are happening all year round. Wait to update your wardrobe, until your favourite store has a sale and then you can pick up new clothes at a fraction of their usual price.
8. Don’t ignore the charity and thrift shops
Don’t let your pride stop you trying charity and thrift shops, because you can find some amazing bargains, even on designer clothes sometimes. Not all clothes sold in the charity shops are second hand either, they often have brand new, end of line items that the bigger stores have donated.
9. Shop out of season
Shop regularly and buy clothes out of season. If you buy your summer wardrobe, when the stores want you to, you will be paying more than you need to. Wait until the end of the season and the prices will drop, then you can save those clothes for next year.
10. Give old clothes a new lease of life
Most items of clothing can be given a new lease of life. Whites can be re-whitened with bleach, expensive items can be professionally cleaned, repaired and re-tailored and clothes can be dyed a different colour. Use your imagination and you can recycle, save money and completely revamp your wardrobe, without having to drain your bank account.
