What exercise burns the most calories?

If you were asked what the best exercise for burning calories is, you’d probably answer running, but running can get so boring if you have to do it every day. Luckily, there are plenty of other forms of exercise that you can take that will burn off calories fast that are a lot more fun than jogging around your local neighbourhood. The best way to keep motivated when you are losing weight is to keep your workout routine interesting, so here are ten types of exercise that help you burn more calories, but that aren’t running.

1. Jumping rope

Jumping rope uses more muscle groups than running and it helps improve your coordination and balance. You can also burn off more calories jumping rope too. Skipping is one of the best exercises there is for burning calories. If you were to skip for one hour, you would burn off about 750 calories. It’s also great fun to do while listening to music and you can try out a few skipping tricks too to add a bit of variety to your workout.

2. Cycling

You could burn off a whopping 1000 calories per hour cycling and you get to explore new places and see some sights. Most cities in the world are now introducing cycle routes and cycle lanes, and that means that cycling to work is now becoming a much safer option.  Alternatively, take your bicycle out into the country and enjoy some cross country cycling.

3. Kickboxing

Kickboxing is a great way to burn off calories quickly and it’s also an ideal way to vent some pent up anger and frustration.  If you have never tried kick boxing before, join a club and take some lessons. You’ll be burning off calories and you’ll be learning a new skill that will probably make you feel a lot more confident when you are out on your own.

4. Battling ropes

Battling ropes have the benefit of combining resistance training and cardiovascular exercise in one, so they will burn calories, tone your muscles, and improve your upper body strength. 6. Indoor rowing

If you work out on an indoor rowing machine, you can burn off around 150 calories every half hour and it’s another form of excise that will tone your muscles as well. It’s also exactly the right kind of exercise for giving your heart and lungs a good workout and it uses virtually every single muscle group in the body.

7. Aerobics

Don’t be embarrassed if you don’t yet know all the moves, you will soon get the hang of aerobics and you’ll be burning off 680 calories in each hour long session as you do. Join an aerobics class and you’ll make new friends and have fun while you exercise. Once you get the hang of it, aerobics is such an easy way to lose weight and keep will help you keep it off too.

8. Zumba

Zumba takes aerobics to a new level by adding in moves that were inspired by Latin American dance.  You can lose about 500 calories per session and you learn some neat little dance moves as well. The great thing about Zumba is that it feels more like a party than a workout. Don’t worry if you’re not the best dancer in the world, because you don’t need to be. 9. Ashtanga yoga

Ashtanga yoga is a gymnastic style of yoga that provides a calorie burning workout that isn’t too hard on the body. It involves flowing smoothly from one move to the next and it’s sometimes called flow yoga. It gives you a great cardio workout and you can burn of calories in a relatively short amount of time.

10. High intensity interval training

High intensity interval training (HIIT) is a way to get more out of your workouts. It involves doing a range of different exercise moves, one after another, at a fast pace. You could do, for example, 10 push ups, followed swiftly by 10 sit-ups, followed by 10 squats. Changing the exercise move every 30 seconds or so is what makes HIIT so effective. You can burn around 300 calories in a 20 minute HIIT workout.
