10 Signs that your personal trainer sucks
If you’ve taken the decision to get yourself in shape, then that’s a great start. Perhaps you have even hired yourself a personal trainer to get your fitness plan worked out. That all sounds a perfectly reasonable thing to do, but how do you know that your personal trainer is worth the money that you are paying them? If you’ve hired a personal trainer and seem to be getting nowhere, here are ten ways that you can tell it’s your trainer that sucks, and is holding you back.
1. They seem to have no plan
A good personal trainer will keep a log of your progress and have a plan in mind for you in the coming months too. If your trainer seems to be making up as they go along, then you have a personal trainer that sucks.
2. They don’t practice what they preach
We know that you shouldn’t judge a book by the cover, but if your trainer looks like they haven’t worked out in years, then you have to be asking yourself some questions. They don’t need to be a strapping athlete, but they should, at least, be taking care of themselves.
3. You don’t seem to be learning anything
The very best personal trainers want to get rid of you! We mean that in the nicest possible way, but a good trainer will teach you things, so that you can train on your own. A bad trainer will want to hang on to you for as long as possible, so they can keep charging you the fees!
4. Everything seems so complicated
A trainer is just like a teacher and they need to be able to explain things in a way that you can understand. If they seem to feel the need to use long words and complicated explanations, then they are probably just trying to impress you and cover up for what they don’t know.
5. They haven’t discussed your diet with you
What you do in a gym is only a small part of the equation to fitness. Your trainer should also be discussing nutrition and a healthy diet with you too, and, if they are not, then you are being short changed.
6. Your trainer never learns anything new
A good trainer will always be looking for new ideas and new ways to train. If your trainer never seems to go on courses, or even read the occasional book, they are not a trainer worth sticking with.
7. They never give you any homework
Your personal trainer should be helping you achieve your goals and that will be by working out on your own, as well as when you are working out with them. You won’t achieve full fitness by exercising one hour a week and your trainer should have told you this.
8. You spend more talking than you do working out
Everyone likes a bit of gossip, but you are paying your trainer to train you, not to let you in on the news! A personal trainer should be focused on the task in hand and if you have time to talk, you’re not working out properly.
9. They just sit back and watch
You don’t need to pay someone to sit and watch you run on a treadmill for an hour either. You should come out of every session feeling that you learned something, not simply that you have done what you could have done by yourself.
10. You are getting nowhere at all
Quite simply, if you aren’t getting results, then your personal trainer sucks. You should be seeing results and feeling fitter and gaining more confidence. If you are not, then you are probably wasting your money. Don’t blame yourself, if this is the case, get another personal trainer!
