Good health tips: 10 benefits of regular stretching for weight loss and health

Stretching isn’t ranked very highly when it comes to exercising to lose weight, but it really does have some amazing benefits. Most fitness camps and training facilities include stretching in their routines and it’s something that everyone can do without the need for any expensive equipment or lessons. If you are not stretching, then read these ten benefits of regular stretching for health and weight loss to find out why you should be adding stretching to your exercise regime:

1. Stretching can be the first step to a more vigorous exercise regime

If you are new to regular exercise and haven’t yet got the confidence to go to a gym, then stretching can be a great way to ease your way into the workout habit. If you start off with a few gentle stretching exercises, you won’t break a sweat or get sore, but you will feel the immediate benefits afterwards.

2. It strengthens muscles

Stretching won’t give you the muscles and physique of a professional body builder, but it will strengthen your core muscles, it will improve your balance and posture and give you the confidence to move on to more strenuous exercise.

3. Stretching exercises for lower back

Lower back pain is a common complaint today, because we all tend to sit for too long and sit in unconformable positions. Stretching exercises are a great way to alleviate back pain, increase your mobility and strengthen your back.

4. Stretching exercises reduce soreness after workouts

Stretching, following a work out, will help to reduce that soreness in your muscles that you can feel for several days after. Stretching lengthens the muscles and promotes good blood flow, so your muscles will feel less tight and less pain.

5. Stretching before a meal will help you eat less

Stretching before a meal can help to reduce your appetite. The exercise relaxes you, it slows you down and it will make you feel more in tune with your own body. This will make you eat your food more slowly and make you more aware of when you have eaten enough.

6. Stretching exercises for flexibility

Increased flexibility is probably one of the best known benefits of stretching. When stretching, you lengthen the fibres in the muscles and so, over time, increase your overall flexibility. It also enables the muscles to grow quicker, you so you gain a greater benefit from your workouts too.

7. Stretching improves your circulation

Stretching your body and your muscles, increases the blood flow and so, improves the supply of oxygen and nutrients to the muscles.

8. It enhances coordination and balance

When you stretch your body regularly, you will start to feel more confident in your movements and begin to find that you have better coordination and balance. Your joints will begin to redevelop their full range of motion, so you will find walking, moving and bending over far easier to do.

9. Stretching is a great stopgap, when you don’t feel up to a full workout

When you don’t have the time, or you feel a bit unwell, stretching makes an ideal way to still get some exercise, without overly exerting yourself. This can also be a good way to make sure that you don’t get out of the exercise habit completely.

10. Less stress

Stretching can help relax tense muscles, which, in turn, will help relief stress and anxiety.
