Keys to a healthy relationship: 8 Reasons why personal space is important in a happy relationship

Having your own space in a relationship is vital to keep the relationship happy and healthy. OK, so you’re in love and that’s great, but that doesn’t mean that you need to spend every second of every day in each other’s company. If you don’t have some time apart, one or both of you may start to feel smothered and caged in. It’s not selfish to get some time on your own and here are eight reasons why personal space is one of the keys to a healthy relationship:

1. You need to retain your own identity, because this is what makes you – you!

You were born an individual, you were brought up by your parents but, you still retained your own individuality. This should apply to an adult relationship as well. No matter how much you love your partner, it is important for your own happiness that you stay true to who you are and still view yourself as an individual person, this is one of the important keys to a healthy relationship.

2. Too much of a good thing gets tedious

You may well adore being with your partner, but too much time together will eventually reduce the pleasure that you get from their company. You might love chocolate too, but you’d soon get sick of it, if that was all you had to eat, therefore, keys to a healthy relationship also include time management wisdom and giving each other some personal space.

3. Everyone needs some privacy

Honesty and openness are the cornerstones of a good relationship, but everybody needs some privacy sometimes. You shouldn’t feel guilty about not sharing absolutely everything and every moment of your life with your partner, sometimes that’s just more information, than they want or need.

4. Everyone is different and that’s why life is interesting

You can possibly have all the same interests, likes and dislikes as your partner, but you’re still an individual. No one should have to forgo all their own interests for the sake of a relationship and you should be able to say ‘you watch that movie, I’ll go and do something else’.

5. Quiet time is good for you, it can help you re-charge your batteries

Another one of the important keys to a healthy relationship is to have a regular quiet time alone. Life is busy enough and we need time to relax and re-charge our batteries and sometimes, the only way to do that is to be on our own. A bit of quiet time on your own is a healthy way to give your mind a break, so reading a book on your own, going for a walk or meditating should be something that you are both able to do from time to time.

6. There’s nothing wrong with ‘me’ time, so don’t feel guilty

There is nothing wrong with needing to be on your own sometimes and it doesn’t mean that there is anything wrong with your relationship. Human beings are born with both the need to be social and the need to be alone at times, so don’t feel guilty about your needs, they are normal.

7. You need friends outside of the relationship

Having friends outside of a relationship is important to you and to the relationship itself. Even in the best of relationships, there are times, when you may wish to discuss things with someone other than your partner, to get an outside point of view. There is nothing wrong with doing this and getting another perspective on a subject might be useful for both you and your partner.

8. It gives you more to talk about

If you do everything together, what on earth you are going to have to talk about! Catching up on your partners’ news and what they have been doing is a part of the fun of a healthy relationship and it helps to keep the conversation interesting.
