10 Inspirational Sayings About Love
As a writer, I feel as though I should have something to say about love. I have something to say about hate, as well as pretty much every other emotion there is.
But love is just hard to define, and each time I try to put into words what love means to me, I fail terribly. The closest I get is “love is more than a feeling.” Lame, I know.
You can forgive me, though, because love is certainly not easy to put into words. It’s a feeling that often can’t be explained. When you love someone, you just feel it. You know you love them but you can’t explain it. Many of us buy Christmas and birthday cards because we know that other’s can put into words what someone means to us more eloquently and more powerfully than we can.
How often have you said to someone, “words just don’t do justice to the way I feel about you”? We’ve all said it.
But while love tosses up numerous emotions, from agony to ecstasy, and while we ourselves might find it hard to put into words what we feel, there have been many gifted poets, artists, writers and romantics of the past (and present) who have been able to perfectly articulate the mysteries of love. Here are ten of our favourite inspirational sayings about love:
“I’m selfish, impatient and a little insecure. I make mistakes, I am out of control and at times hard to handle. But if you can’t handle me at my worst, then you sure as hell don’t deserve me at my best.”
– Marilyn Monroe
You’ve probably seen this on a friend’s Facebook at some point, or maybe you’ve even used it in a meme yourself. But it’s a great quote from a fabulous woman who knew exactly what it meant to love, and to be loved.
None of us are perfect. We’re all rough copies who have flaws. We make mistakes, hurt others and are not always so easy to deal with. But anyone who deserves our heart is someone who is prepared to be there with us, through both the good times and the bad times.
“Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.”
– Martin Luther King Jr.
Whatever your thoughts are on politics, few (if any) can deny that Martin Luther King Jr. was a great man with a very big heart. He approached politics differently to many others – he approached it with love.
Preaching kindness as one of mankind’s most powerful virtues, Luther King Jr. here reminds us that there is only one way to conquer hate – and it isn’t through weapons and war.
Loving your neighbour could be the most revolutionary act you commit today.
“Don’t settle for a relationship that won’t let you be yourself.”
– Oprah Winfrey
So true. Love between two people is when you both feel entirely comfortable with who you are. If you can’t be yourself in a relationship – that isn’t love.
“If I know what love is, it is because of you.”
– Herman Hesse
This is a really sweet quote from German novelist Herman Hesse. It’s wonderfully succinct and absolutely gorgeous.
“It is not a lack of love, but a lack of friendship that makes unhappy marriages.”
– Friedrich Nietzsche
Friedrich Nietzsche was one of my favourite philosophers when I was young and purposeless. He taught me the wisdom of thinking for myself and not following the crowd. If I made my own decisions based on my own sound judgement, I’d find happiness.
Frustratingly, a lot of people interpret Nietzsche’s philosophy in the exact opposite way, suggesting instead that here was an unbeliever who preached doom and gloom. Not true, and this quote proves it.
It’s such a simple statement on love, but it’s so on point. You’ve not just got to simply love your partner – you have to display all the qualities of a best friend, too.
“Love is of all passions the strongest, for it attacks simultaneously the head, the heart and the senses.”
– Lao Tzu
This is very true. When we fall in love, we fall in love completely. Every part of our body aches and throbs when the other person is away.
A bit of you can’t fall in love – it takes all of you.
“I love you without knowing how, or when, or from where. I love you simply, without problems or pride: I love you in this way because I do not know any other way of loving but this, in which there is no I or you, so intimate that your hand upon my chest is my hand, so intimate that when I fall asleep your eyes close.”
– Pablo Neruda
Yup, this quote from dear old Pablo just about sums it up for me – and presumably many of you guys.
Love is impossible to explain or pin in a corner. Don’t ask us why we love you, because sometimes we just love without knowing why.
“Have you ever been in love? Horrible isn’t it? It makes you so vulnerable. It opens your chest and it opens up your heart and it means that someone can get inside you and mess you up.”
– Neil Gaiman
Now, this quote comes from graphic novelist Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman series. I haven’t read any of his stuff, but in researching for this article I asked a few friends to offer me up their favourite sayings about love. One of my friends sent me this, and I have no idea whether or not the character expressing the words is being ironic or literal.
However, what they are saying is partly true; love makes us so vulnerable, opening up our heart and letting someone in – but it’s beautiful.
“To love is nothing. To be loved is something. But to love and be loved, that’s everything.”
– T. Tolis
There is perhaps nothing more wrenching than unrequited love. If you love someone, it feels empty and hollow unless they return your affection.
And once they do, it’s breathtaking.
“There’s no substitute for a great love who says, ‘No matter what’s wrong with you, you’re welcome at this table.'”
– Tom Hanks
I think Tom Hanks is so right here. Families and friends who love one another welcome you at the table, no matter what you’ve done. They love you, and they’re going to sit with you and talk things through.
This is the strongest kind of love; it’s eternal and everlasting, and can’t be broken. Love is just so powerful.
