How to simplify your life? 10 Must-know tips

Sometimes, you can think you are busy, when all you really are is disorganised! So, if you are worried about the one million and one things you have to do today, stop! Read these ten ways to simplify your life. You’ll be glad you did.

1. Simplify and prioritise your to do list for life

Put first  things first! Don’t worry, this won’t take long! All you need to do, to start simplifying your life, is to make a short list of the things that are really important to you and keep that list to no more than seven, really important, things. Simplifying starts with the realisation that a lot of what you do is actually not important to you at all.

2. Declutter your life, your home, your fridge and your relationships

Another good tip on how to simplify your life is to declutter your life in every way. You will have heard this one before, but you’ve probably never done anything about it. In fact, you’ve probably been telling yourself that you don’t have time to do it! Well, this is one of those classic chicken and egg scenarios, because until you do it, you won’t have time to. Make that time and clear out the clutter, reorganise your home, your work space, your fridge, and yes, declutter your relationships too; and you will be far more productive and your life will become simpler.

3. Make a list of things to do every day; simplify and prioritise it too

Here’s another thing that will save you time, but will take some time. Make a to-do list of all your tasks today and put them in order of priority. Then be firm, cross pout the things that really don’t matter and are not going to help you achieve any one of those seven important life priorities that you thought of earlier.

4. Understand the power of NO

Next secret on how to simplify your life is to understand the great power of saying NO. It’s a fine thing to be helping out other people, but sometimes you just have to say, ‘sorry, but NO, I can’t do it’. Only take on what you know that you can do comfortably and don’t do favours, when you simply don’t have the time to do them.

5. Make your own rules and establish your own guidelines

It’s your life, so it’s time that you made some rules. Set your own guidelines for yourself to make sure that you get to do the things that you want and give yourself adequate ‘me time’.

6. Reorganise your online life

Computers are supposed to make things simpler, but they often have the opposite effect. After a while, you can end up with half a dozen email accounts, files stored haphazardly on your hard drive and then you have your laptop, your home PC and your tablet. No wonder you can never find anything! Spend some time organising and slim-lining your use of technology, it could save you hours.

7. Stop multi-tasking

By now, hopefully, you will have made your priorities and been fairly cut throat with your to-do list. Now, start at the top of your list and work your way down, one task at a time. Don’t be distracted, one task at a time is simpler to do and you will be able to get it done faster.

8. Don’t buy what you don’t need

Another good tip on how to simplify your life is to avoid buying things that your don’t really need. One of the biggest complications in life can be a shortage of money, so only buy what you need and only buy it when you can afford it. If you have overspent, then take some time to reorganise your finances, because juggling with money is a complication that you really don’t need.

9. Redistribute your work and outsource where you can

Delegation doesn’t’ only apply to the workplace, it’s important at home as well. Don’t take on everything yourself; get help when you need it. You can start by making the kids clean their own rooms or perhaps get your partner to pick up his own dirty washing!

10. Always look for the easiest route

Many people are just great at making their own lives complicated. Take a step back and ask yourself, is there an easier way to do this? Sometimes, that’s all it takes to simplify things.
