10 Tips On How To Manage Your Time Effectively And Get More Done In A Day

According to Parkinson’s Law, we procrastinate because we’re given too much time to do something. If an office worker is given 8 hours to complete a task that should only take 4 hours, they invariably take 8 hours to complete the task. They prolong it, take their time, and get distracted.

But imagine if our deadlines were shortened and we actually had to work faster than ever before? The result would be that we’d be more productive!

If only.

Indeed, many of us want to be more productive, and we want to use our time more wisely. But because we feel there is such an abundance of time, we sit back, relax and take our time.

If you’re looking to get out of this malaise, let’s take a look at 10 top tips on how to manage your time effectively and get more done in a day.

1. Shorten Your Deadlines

As just mentioned, we’re more likely to take our time, procrastinate and put things off if we give ourselves extended deadlines.

If you’ve got household chores that need to be completed, put a little bit more pressure on yourself to get them done quicker.

Naturally, you don’t want to be unrealistic and shorten your deadlines to the point where you’re literally going to explode from exhaustion, but if you shave off a bit of time on your deadlines, you will be inclined to work faster and harder. You will get more done.

2. Be Realistic

Another good tip on how to manage your time effectively is simply to be realistic. What we mean by this is don’t overcommit. If you overestimate your ability to multitask, you might find yourself burning out. Yes, you need to set big goals, and yes you want to achieve more in a day. But using your time wisely means being realistic and logical.

For example, you could set small but achievable goals to start with. Break down big projects into smaller tasks. By starting on small projects, you are more likely to finish them, which serves as good motivation.

3. Say “No”

Saying yes is all well and good. There was even a movie starring Jim Carey in which his unambitious character decided to say “yes” to everything that anyone ever asked of him in a bid to bring out the sense of adventure within him.

But if you’re looking to get more done in a day, you need to know when to say “no”. This doesn’t just mean saying no to people; it also means learning to say no to yourself. If there is something you want to do but which you don’t actually need to do – learn to say no!

4. Time Yourself

If you’ve ever been timed at work, you’ll know how awful it is. You can feel your boss watching over you, and you simply can’t help looking at the timer. But does it lead to more mistakes, or does it actually help you to work quicker and subsequently be more productive?

Try timing yourself and see how you feel about it. You might just find that that long email you thought would take you 2 hours to complete actually only takes you one hour. This is because your mind is more focused, and you’re less given over to distractions.

5. Become More Organised

Next simple tip on how to manage your time effectively is to become more organized. You simply can’t get more done in a day unless you’re an organised person. Your time management skills are key here, and the better you are able to manager your day, the more productive you will be.

Each morning, you could use the first fifteen minutes to organise your day. Schedule what you’re going to do, and write up a “to do” list.

6. Avoid Day Wasters

How to manage your time effectively? Say NO to day wasters. You know how it goes. You want to actually get things done, but you just can’t help logging into Facebook and scrolling up and down your newsfeed. Then you get distracted when you see some cute kid photos, and you get roped into a conversation on someone’s wall.

Ten minutes later, you scroll through your newsfeed again. Perhaps someone has posted something new! Maybe someone has even changed their profile picture. Ooo!

Surfing the Internet is really unproductive and actually gets you nowhere. Social media networks, such as Facebook or Instagram, can become addictive and it’s scary to think how many hours a year we lose to them. It’s time to hide your profile and move on with your life!

7. Wake Up Earlier

Next tip on how to manage your time effectively and get more done in a day is to wake up earlier. Yup, we all love lying in. There is just no better feeling than waking up at 9am, before ambling downstairs for some breakfast and a cup of coffee.

But actually, there is a better feeling. Waking up at 7am might sound a whole lot worse than lying in, but it comes with a number of key benefits for how the rest of your day goes. Not only will you have more time to do more things, but you will also feel pretty darn great knowing that you’re being active and productive, whilst the world continues to lazily snooze.

8. Renew Your Energy

Another useful tip on how to manage your time effectively is to take time to recharge your batteries. You simply can’t work work work all day long. It’s exhausting, and eventually you will burn out.

Instead, you should allow yourself a few breaks. These short breaks won’t hamper your productivity by eating into your time, but they will allow you to re-energise, before returning with a refreshed mind.

9. Sleep

As well as waking up earlier, you need to get enough sleep. For this reason, it’s advisable that you also go to bed a little earlier, so that you still get between 7-8 hours of rest each night.

The importance of sleep is not to be underestimated, and a good night’s rest plays a key role in a more productive life. Waking up bleary eyed because you only got a few hours the night before is not going to help you get more done. Instead, you will spend the day daydreaming about your mattress!

10. Be More Healthy

Healthier people are fitter people. They have more energy and can consequently get more done in a day.

You might look like a picture of health, but this doesn’t necessarily mean that you feel like a picture of health. What you might not know is that processed foods, such as bacon slow you down by storing unhealthy fats in your brain. Starting the day with a healthy breakfast is essential to working faster and harder.

Stay happy!
