10 Amazing Ways To Use Honey For Your Beauty And Health
The only thing I knew about honey when I was growing up as a child was that bees made and hoarded honey – and they’d go mortal on you if you tried to pinch even just a tiny sample.
(Yes, I learned all this the hard way).
Fast forward to adulthood, and I know a lot more about honey. I know that it’s a natural sweetener, is a fantastic substitute for sugar – and is amazing for your overall beauty and health.
Yep, honey is one of the bee’s best ever creations (don’t ask me what else they’ve created), and by adding honey to your healthy and beauty regime, you’d be doing yourself a MASSIVE favour.
But how to do this? Let’s take a look!
A Gentle Exfoliator
Honey is rich in all kinds of good stuff, including enzymes, antioxidants and a whole wealth of fantastic nutrients. These goodies help to cleanse, nourish and hydrate your skin, keeping it fresh and healthy-looking.
To make a gentle exfoliator, you can combine it with baking soda. Why? Because baking soda is a natural exfoliator that is great at removing nasty dead skin cells, giving the chance for new ones to grow and give your skin a shine.
To make your own exfoliator, simply mix 2 tablespoons of honey with a single tablespoon of baking soda.
Then, dab your skin with water before rubbing (gently) the mixture on your face in a soft circular motion.
Fight The Flu
When I was young, I used to say that I didn’t mind catching a cold because “at least I know what it is.”
Looking back, it seems like a strange thing to say because, although I know exactly what it is, it feels 100 times worse now that I’m older!
I usually stock up on medicines when I’m dying from the flu, but my favourite of all time is a cup of hot water that is laced with lemon, ginger, cinnamon – and honey.
Treat Acne With It
Acne is anyone’s worst nightmare when we’ve got something really important to do that requires us to show our face. Acne breakouts can potentially strike at anytime, but they usually happen the night before your prom or a job interview. Acne obviously hates us!
There are many ways to eliminate acne, but perhaps one of the most natural ways to do it is by using honey.
Because honey is loaded with anti fungal and antibacterial agents, it is able to double down on acne – as well as the bacteria that causes it. It soothes irritation and calms redness.
Simply apply a smidgen of raw honey to any area affected, before leaving to sit for up to 10 minutes.
Feeling sick and being sick is not pleasant at all. When you’re struggling to even hold water down, the last thing you probably feel like is a mix of honey and raw garlic.
But trust me on this one because it totally works.
Simply combine a teaspoon of honey with a pinch of raw minced garlic before swallowing. It sounds yucky, but all the things that are good for you are yucky.
My dad would tell me that we should be proud of our scars.
“Scars tell others that you’ve lived an embittered life,” he’d say. “They say ‘here is a fighter.’”
But just in case you don’t want to look like you’ve lived an embittered life on your first date, honey can eradicate any pesky scars that are really getting on your nerves.
Honey lightens skin, and its anti bacterial and anti inflammatory agents minimise the unsightly appearance of scars. Honey also regenerates tissue and promotes healing. Honey wins.
To fade scars, mix a single teaspoon of honey with a single teaspoon of coconut oil. Then, apply the mixture to any affected area before gently massaging in a circular motion for around three minutes.
Next, apply a hot washcloth over the area before allowing to cool.
Do this each day until your scar becomes a memory.
Treat A Sore Stomach
Would you rather have a headache, a stomach ache or tooth ache? I’d rather have neither, but at least I know that honey – when combined with ginger – can soothe an upset tummy.
Honey contains lots of enzymes that keep your pores nice and clean. It also contains many anti bacterial compounds that stop bacteria from building up and causing your skin to breakout in acne.
To make yourself a pore cleaner from honey, simply stir a single tablespoon of raw honey with 2 tablespoons of coconut oil. Wait until the concoction is consistent.
Then, apply it to your skin before massaging in a circular motion for around five minutes.
Soothe A Sore Throat
Sore throats are just nasty. To alleviate that scratchy sensation that is making you want to jump back in bed and hide away from the world (and that public presentation), make yourself a homemade syrup rich in honey.
Is there anything worse than sunburn when you’re on holiday? We all eagerly check the weather reports before we board our flight, praying for blistering sunshine.
Two days later, we’re praying for a storm while we nurse our inflamed skin in our hotel room.
Sunburn is absolutely horrendous, but if you take a jar of raw honey on holiday with you, you might have half a chance of soothing any damage.
Honey works because it restores hydration to any skin that has been burnt by the skin, and it’s also rich in anti-inflammatory agents that soothe reddened skin and promote a speedy recovery.
Simply mix together raw honey with aloe vera gel (more aloe vera than honey) before applying to your sunburned skin.
… And Any Burns In General
Honey doesn’t just work for sunburn – it works for all kinds of burns. If you’ve caught your finger on a hot stove or accidentally spilled boiling water on yourself, you should first of all place the affected area under cold water for up to ten minutes.
Then, apply a mix of honey and aloe vera gel to the affected area. Their anti-inflammatory compounds will soon work their magic.
