Cucumber is your skin’s best friend…Here is why…
Who’d have thought that something so simple and that is made up of 90% water, could be so beneficial for your skin. Cucumbers contain a lot more than just water. They also contain essential nutrients such as caffeic acid and Vitamin C, which help to reduce irritation in the skin and rejuvenate it, and the skin of a cucumber contains silica, which firms up the skin. So, before you think of cucumber as nothing more than a cure for puffy eyes, read these ten amazing reasons why you should believe that cucumber could be your skin’s best friend.
1. It is gentle enough, even for the most sensitive skin
Before we get on to any of the specific benefits of cucumber for the skin, it’s worth mentioning that, unlike many commercial products, cucumber can be used on even the most sensitive skin. It’s soothing, cooling, and it contains absolutely no harsh ingredients or chemicals. You can’t get any more natural than that!
2. It really does cure puffy eyes
It’s not an old wives tale that cucumbers can reduce puffy eyes; it really does work. A couple of cold cucumber slices, placed over the eyes, will quickly reduce swelling of puffy lids. It is partly the cold that does this, but it is also the antioxidants and flavonoids in cucumber that help to reduce irritation and redness.
3. Tightens up the pores
Cucumber makes a great ingredient in facial toners. You can use cucumber juice by itself, or mix it with honey and a few drops of lemon juice if you prefer. It’s a cool and refreshing way to hydrate your skin and it will also tighten up the pores.
4. Fade scars
Sometimes, the scars that acne leaves behind are worse than the acne itself, but cucumber can help you out here too. To help scars heal faster and make them fade, apply a mixture of cucumber juice and lemon juice to the skin with a cotton wool ball and leave it sit for about ten minutes. If you repeat that daily, you will soon notice the scars beginning to fade.
5. Soothe sunburn
As anyone will know who has spent a little bit too long in the sun, sunburn can be a really painful business. Now, you know that you shouldn’t let yourself get sunburned anyway, but if you do, cucumber will soon cool down the heat and ease the pain. Just apply slices of cucumber to the affected areas and leave it in for about fifteen minutes. Then apply a light moisturiser to re-hydrate your burned skin.
6. Lighten freckles
Cucumber also has very gentle bleaching action, which will lighten freckles on the skin. Just gently rub some cucumber juice into the skin on your face and neck daily and it will slowly lighten the colour of freckles and, eventually, make them almost invisible.
7. Use it in anti-ageing face masks
The Vitamin C and caffeic acid in cucumbers also act as antioxidants that can help to slow the appearance of the signs of ageing. To make a great homemade anti-ageing face mask, puree half a cucumber and mix that with two tablespoons of plain yoghurt. The anti-oxidants in the cucumber will fight the signs of ageing and the yoghurt will gently exfoliate your skin.
8. Reduces cellulite
The tightening effect that cucumber has on the skin can help to reduce the dimpling that is caused by fat deposits under the skin that we call cellulite. Apply a mixture of honey and cucumber juice to the affected area and massage it well in. It will help to firm up and tighten the collagen in the skin and so reduce the signs of the cellulite.
9. Use it to exfoliate
Here’s a great recipe for an exfoliating scrub that won’t aggravate your skin at all. Blend some cucumber into a puree and then add a tablespoon of brown sugar, a tablespoon of yoghurt and mix it all together. Apply it to your face a neck and rub it gently in, using circular motions. Leave the mixture on your skin for about ten minutes and then wash it off with cool water.
10. Use it to rehydrate dry skin
Cucumber has a natural rehydrating effect, especially when it’s mixed with honey. To make a homemade moisturiser, all you need to do is to mix some pureed cucumber with a tablespoon of raw honey. Apply the mixture to your face and leave it for ten or fifteen minutes before you wash it off with some warm water. This simple mixture will rehydrate dry skin and the anti-bacterial properties of the honey will also help to fight the bacteria that cause breakouts.
