What to do when you feel lonely? 10 tips on how to cheer up
How to stop feeling lonely? Feeling lonely is very different from being alone and it is important to recognize this because, paradoxically, you can feel lonely, even if you are surrounded by many people. We are, by nature, very social creatures and we like to have other people around us, but there are times when we all just feel a bit lonely and sad. There are ways to cheer yourself up though, even when you actually are on your own, and here are ten tips on how you can do it:
1. Phone a friend
Our first suggestion on what to do when you feel lonely is simply phone a friend. Very few people are truly alone, so have a think about the people that you know and give someone a call on the phone. Just a ten minute conversation with a friend or a family member can really lift up your mood. If no one’s at home, then go out for a walk or go shopping. Seriously, even just passing the time of day with a store assistant will make you feel less lonely.
2. Make the most of the peace and quiet
Take the time to enjoy your moment of peace and quiet, and indulge yourself in something that you wouldn’t normally be able to do. If you’re feeling lonely, because your partner is working and the kids have gone out, then now’s the perfect time for reading a good book, meditating, doing yoga, indulging in your hobby or simply watching your favorite TV show that no one else in the family likes to watch.
3. Dance away the blues
Dancing is another option of what to do when you feel lonely. Don’t be self-conscious, no one’s looking, so crank up the volume on your favorite dance music and strut your stuff! Dancing is a great way to relieve tension and stress and you get a workout, while you’re enjoying yourself too. Like all exercise, dancing will make your body release endorphins, which are the hormones that will cheer you up and make you feel good.
4. What to do when you feel lonely? Create something
Half the battle in beating loneliness is simply occupying your time. If you are sitting around doing nothing, then you are going to get bored and if you are bored, then you are just going to feel worse. Make the most of your time on your own and try your hand at something creative. You could try drawing, singing, painting, pottery or be creative online and set up your own website or blog.
5. Remind yourself how good laughing can feel
However lonely or sad you feel, it’s almost impossible not laugh, when you see something funny. The problem is, when we are feeling low, we deliberately don’t look for fun things to do, so we get into a downward spiral of bad moods. Put on a comedy film on the TV or go out to a comedy club for a night out and remind yourself how good laughing can feel.
6. Have a clear out of all your clutter to liberate the energy
Some people believe that negative energy resides in the clutter around the home. If you clear out the clutter, you clear out the negative energy and make room for the positive energy to get into your life. Whether or not you believe that, there is no doubt that a good clean up is always very therapeutic, when you are feeling down and a clean and tidy home or workspace will help to make your life easier, and it will cheer you up too.
7. Set yourself some short term and long term goals
Another tip on what to do when you feel lonely is direct your energy towards your goals. If you feel lost, because nobody else is around, then set yourself some tasks for the coming day, week, a year or even years to come. Get motivated and be your own taskmaster, keep yourself occupied and don’t forget to reward yourself with a pat on the back and a treat, when you achieve your goals.
8. Do something nice and kind for somebody
Another suggestion on how to stop feeling lonely is do something good for somebody. Feeling lonely is not a nice feeling, but there are a lot worse things to be. One way to get you out and be with people is to volunteer and to help others. Take some of that free time and put it to good use at an old people’s home or children’s day centre; you’ll put a smile on someone’s face, and on your own.
9. Address the underlying problems, don’t hide from them
Loneliness and unhappiness are very often caused by other factors. If you can identify and begin to address the real root cause of your feelings of loneliness and sadness, you will gradually begin to feel better. It can feel like you are the only person in the world who is experiencing your particular problems, and that can be a lonely place to be. But, the reality is that you won’t be alone in this, whatever it is. So talk to someone, find a support group or seek help on the internet. The first thing that you will learn is that you are not on your own.
10. Write a magic gratitude journal
And finally, our last tip on how to stop feeling lonely and what to do when you feel lonely is – write a magic gratitude journal. We all have things to be grateful for, even people that live on their own. Write down a list of ten things that you are grateful for each and every day, and you will be surprised at all the things that you do have. Even the fact that the sun is shining today is something to be grateful for, so write it down, along with everything else, and you will soon find that ten a day is not enough for your whole list of blessings that you can be grateful for.
