How to live life without regrets? 10 useful tips

Is a life without regrets possible or is it just a hopeless dream? We all build up a little list of regrets, as life goes by: ‘I shouldn’t have said that’ or ‘I could have done this’…But, the trick is to make sure that the time when you reach the latter years of your life, the only regrets that are left on your list are minor ones. So, as long as you’re still breathing, however young or old you are, there is still time to get some of those regrets off your list, so here are some motivational tips and ten ways that you can help yourself to keep your list of regrets manageable:

1. Know what’s important to you

Life is full of twists and turns and no one can really know what it holds in store for us, so any plans that you make can only be in outline form. What is important however is to make sure that you prioritize the things that are really important to you. You may get to the end of your life, having never made CEO of your company, but did you spend enough time with your kids or loved ones?

2. Don’t be afraid to take risks

Things do go wrong and they will go wrong, but one of the biggest regrets that you can have is to not have even tried. Risk means a different thing to different people, though; for some it is the physical risk of trying bungee jumping, for others it is simply the fear of flying to a foreign country. Whatever the fear, however small, confront it and try, or you might regret it.

3. Failure is fine

Most successful business people and top athletes fail, at least, once on their way to achieving their goals. The difference is though that they recognise that a mistake is only a lesson and you can learn from it; they never give up trying.

4. Be open to new ideas

You can’t possibly have experienced everything in life that you want yet, so don’t be afraid of trying something new, just because it’s a bit outside of your usual comfort zone. You want to have some stories to tell your grandchildren, don’t you? So get out there and try something new!

5. Be true to yourself

It’s not selfish to put yourself first occasionally and it is possible to follow your own dreams, while still being a kind and considerate person. Be sure to assert yourself, be true to yourself and do the things that you want, as well as looking after those around you.

6. Enjoy the journey

Life is what you make it, so enjoy the trip and look around you as you go and take in the scenery. Remember, life’s downs are just lessons, life’s ups are the reward.

7. Fix the mistakes as fast, as you can

Sometimes time can run away with us and before we know it, it’s too late to fix something that we could have fixed years ago. Have the courage to admit that you are wrong or hold the olive branch to someone that you have fallen out with, before it’s too late.

8. Take time out

The world won’t end if you take some personal time out, and people will manage it without you. Truth is, they probably won’t even notice that you were gone for a while! Take some time off and switch off your phone, don’t read your emails, go and do something else, do something that you enjoy for a change.

9. Keep looking forward

Put your mistakes behind you. Fix fast those that you can and forget those that you can’t, tomorrow is another day. It’s only the mistakes that you dwell upon that actually become regrets.

10. Share your love

Be sure to spend your time with those that you love and tell them that you love them often. Live life to the full, make the most of every opportunity and be honest throughout; you should be left with only those minor regrets on your list.
