10 Ways To Love Yourself More
We’re always being told that we should smile and love the world more, but loving the world and everyone in it starts from loving yourself. If you can’t even love yourself, you’ll certainly have a hard time trying to love a stranger!
Loving ourselves is not exactly easy, particularly if we’re not even sure what the phrase means. What does it really mean to love oneself? Does it mean treating ourselves? Does it mean spending entire days in bed, lounging around? Or does it mean hitting the gym and improving our diet?
The truth is that loving yourself can be a combination of all of the above. And self-love is actually easy, once you know how to do it. Let’s take a look at some tips on how to learn to love yourself more.
Spend Some Time Alone
Sometimes, we’re just too busy spending time with other people to spend some quality time alone loving ourselves.
Instead of connecting with ourselves, we’re connecting with others and enhancing their lives.
But love starts at home, and to start out on this whole self-love thing, you’ve got to put some time aside for yourself. No one else is invited; lock the door, bar the windows, turn off your phone, and switch off your laptop. Head to the cinema and catch a film YOU want to see; go to a museum and look at the things YOU want to see; go to a the kind of restaurant YOU want to go to.
Pay Yourself A Few Compliments
Sometimes, we really do have to be our best cheerleader. Because, who else is going to do it?
If you haven’t had a compliment for a while, you might be sulking and wondering why people aren’t all that kind anymore.
But when was the last time YOU complimented yourself? Tsk!
It’s time to face yourself in the mirror, take a deep breath, and tell yourself a few nice things. Compliment your hair today, or your lovely smile. Remind yourself that you’re the best and that you can achieve anything you want.
Shift Your Focus
As we get older, we start to think about the things that really matter. Looks eventually fade, but knowledge can last a lifetime.
For this reason, it’s time that you started to think about your mind a bit more. How much do you really know about the world? How much do you really want to know? If you feel as though you’re lacking enough qualifications to switch careers, just remember that it’s never too late to go back to school. If there are books you’ve always wanted to read but never got round to, now is your chance to do it. Focus on your inside and cultivate your mind.
Assess What You’re Taking In
… And we’re not talking about food here! (Although improving your diet is a good thing which we will come back to).
Instead, what we want you to do is evaluate what you are feeding yourself in terms of all the news stories you’re listening to, all the gossip you’re reading, and all the media you’re exposed to.
Do you pay too much attention to Facebook? Are negative news items bringing you down? Are you looking up your symptoms online? If so, you need to start removing yourself from these theatre of internal conflicts.
Get outdoors and free your mind from negativity. Change course and welcome something more positive into your life.
Improve Your Diet
Diet is super important to self-love. You might assume that gorging on junk food and sweets whenever you’ve had a hard day at work is a great way to love yourself, but it’s wholly unhealthy and won’t be doing you any good in the long run.
Moreover, your body certainly won’t be thanking you for it!
Junk food loads your body with bad fats, and these fats also make their way to your brain. This can cause brain fog and depression.
To feel better about yourself, it’s time to start eating cleaner. Try more vegetables and fruits, and cut down on the snacks, junk and meat.
Stop Trying To Win The Approval Of Others
Everyone loves to receive feedback at work for a good job they’ve just done, and its’s 100% important that managers indulge you.
But trying to win the approval of other people all the time will bring you down, and can make you feel inferior when they don’t dish it out.
Rather than waiting to see what other people have said of your efforts, remind yourself of what a great job you’ve just done. Self-appraise is great and it means that you are never left hanging as you wait for someone else to pat you on the back.
Leave Negative Friends Behind
Leaving friends behind is never easy, and we wouldn’t say this lightly. But if you surround yourself with negative people who are filled with a pessimistic worldview, they’re going to drag you down with them.
And this is disastrous for self-love.
Friends should motivate us, and encourage us to do better. They should love and respect us. They should not remind us that we aren’t good enough and that we shouldn’t even try.
With friends like that, who needs enemies? Talk to them about how you feel and move on if necessary.
Find Something You’re Great At
Quite often, we feel down in the dumps because we feel worthless. We try something and we suck at it. We fail.
Failure is actually teacher that helps us to iron out mistakes and improve. If you suffer a setback after trying something, you might just need to analyse where you went wrong, before getting back on the horse and trying again.
Alternatively, you should find something you know you’re going to be great at (because it’s something you’re passionate about) and stick to it.
For example, perhaps you’ve always wanted to learn how to play chess. You might suck at first, but the key is to keep playing and learning.
Keep Your Promises To Yourself
We all make promises to other people, and we work super hard to make sure that we keep those promises.
But how hard do we work at keeping the promises that we make to ourselves? These could be as simple as going to bed early, or they could be as big as taking a break from work.
Appreciate What You Have
Lastly, you should spend some time appreciating what you have right now. Be grateful for the things and the people that are in your life, and remember that as long as you’ve got your health, you can achieve mostly anything. Believe in yourself and love yourself.
