How to tell whether you love yourself or not?
There is a lot of advice on the web and in self-help books that tells you how important it is that you love yourself, if you want to be happy and fulfilled. You might think that means that every time you see your reflection, you admire it and think how wonderful you are, but there is a lot more to self-love than having a high opinion of yourself. Genuinely loving yourself is very different from narcissism, it means taking care of yourself, honoring your own happiness, and truly accepting who you are. So, do you love yourself? If you are not sure, here are ten ways to tell if you love yourself, or if you need to work on that self-love a bit more.
1. You are comfortable with your emotions
If you want to love yourself, you need to be in touch with your own emotions and not feel the need to hide them. Laugh out loud when you want to, and have a good cry when you feel you need to. Your emotions are an important part of your personality, so you should honor them. Your emotions also tell you what is right for you and what will make you happy.
2. You don’t dwell on the past
If you love yourself, you won’t be a person who lets the past drag you down. You are a person who accepts their mistakes and has learned to live with the past without holding on to it. You love who you are today and you don’t worry so much about who you were yesterday. You have put the past where it belongs and now you have moved on.
3. You trust your inner voice
You will have also learned that you are the best person to make choices about your own life, and you trust your heart and your intuition. You are happy to take advice from other people, but you are confident enough in your own abilities to make decisions for yourself. Past experience has also shown you that your gut feelings are usually right.
4. You are proud of your successes
Loving yourself doesn’t mean that you have an overinflated opinion of yourself, but you are happy about your achievements and you do celebrate them. You are also not afraid to admit when you are wrong and have made a mistake. You are perfectly comfortable with both your faults and with your abilities.
5. You know what you want out of life
People who love themselves also have a sense of purpose. They know what they want out of life and they do whatever they can to make sure that they get it. The reason that they have so much drive and ambition is that they are so determined to be happy. They want to give themselves every possible chance at being the very best person that they can be.
6. You don’t worry too much about what other people think
You will find that people who love themselves don’t concern themselves too much about what other people think about them and nor do they waste time passing judgment on other people. When someone is truly happy with whom they are; why would they bother themselves with what other people say about them?
7. You love your own body and you look after it
Loving yourself is also about taking good care of the body that you have been given. If you love yourself, you probably don’t obsess over your weight and your appearance, but you still take good care of your health, because you want to be kind to your body. You eat healthily and you keep active because you enjoy living that way.
8. You are always true to yourself
You are probably an authentic person too. You don’t lie to yourself and you don’t lie to other people. You also stick by your beliefs and your principals, and you would never pretend to be something that you are not. People who love themselves have the confidence to be truthful and the courage to stand by their convictions.
9. You have fun and enjoy the moment
You might have your plans for the future, but that doesn’t stop you enjoying every minute of today. You fully engage in whatever happening right now and really do live in the present. People who love themselves also have a love for life and they live for the moment. They fully engage in whatever is happening around them and they savour every moment.
10. You like who you are
Above all else, you actually like the person that you are. You may have your flaws, you may have your faults, but when you take a good look at yourself, all things considered, you’re quite happy with the way you’ve turned out!
