How To Deal With Anxiety? … And It’s Not About Medication Or Meditation

When people talk about their health, it is usually the physical ailments that they would rather not have: Cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, the common cold, arthritis, osteoporosis, chronic migraines, recurring toothache and so on.

But if you asked me which ailment I’d love to be able to eradicate in an instant, it would be anxiety.

Anyone who suffers from severe and chronic anxiety knows that it is one of the most debilitating illnesses possible. Its symptoms manifest themselves both physically and mentally, and it can prevent you from being yourself. In short, anxiety is a long-term illness that can emotionally cripple a person to the point where they are no longer able to do their job, or even leave their house.

The problem is that doctor’s all too often think the solution to anxiety is as easy as putting you on medication. At Beauty & Tips, we know there are many better ways to manager anxiety without resorting to pills, or even meditation. So let’s take a look at a few alternative tips on how to deal with anxiety.

Do Not Be So Strict With Your Diet

You might be on a strict diet for physical reasons; perhaps you’re trying to lose weight, put on muscle, look leaner, and so on. But did you know that your diet can also induce panic attacks without you realising it? For example, a diet that is too rich in protein can induce anxiety in certain people, while a diet that is too low in carbs can have the same effect.

Your diet is undeniably important to your physical wellbeing, but you also need to take care of your mind, too. Take a look at your diet and consider what effect it is having on your anxiety; if you are on a low carb diet and are prone to feeling anxious, consider eating more carbs. Likewise, if you’ve recently given up a food type recently – such as dairy – and are consequently suffering from panic attacks, perhaps you should consider returning to it.

Cut Out The Caffeine

I know what you’re thinking. You really didn’t want me to go here. Your morning coffee is what gives you a boost, and you rely on it.

But perhaps you rely on it a little bit too much.

You don’t have to go cold turkey; I’m not saying that you need to eliminate caffeine altogether. In fact, that is something you definitely shouldn’t do. But if you drink a lot of coffee, you should at least make the effort to reduce your daily intake to either one or two cups of Joe. This is because caffeine produces anxiety in many people it’s a stimulant and drinking it can be counter productive if you suffer from panic attacks.

Get Moving

It has long been established that exercise is a great way to remove anxiety and stress. You can choose to do any type of exercise, be it a team sport or a morning jog in the park. It’s all about the mind-body connection, you see. What you’re looking for is mindfulness that reduces stress and focuses on the movement of your body. Physical activities deflect attention from your mind, and make you feel very good.

Talk To Somebody

Many of us feel so much worse when we keep everything bottled up. Sitting there at night in a crowded room with our family, knowing we feel terrible, only makes us feel isolated. Talking to other people, however, can help to relieve some symptoms.

The person you talk to can either be a professional, such as a therapist, or it could be a friend or a family member. A professional therapist can be a big help in your recovery and rehabilitation, as they will be able to talk you through your problems.

If, however, you cannot afford to go to a therapist, try opening up to a member of your family or friends. Do it face to face, though, and not online or over the telephone.

Listen To Music!

This is another great tip on how to deal with anxiety. It’s a well-known fact that music can lift our spirits and make us feel a whole lot better. Music can even cure physical illnesses!

The key is the type of music you listen to. Even if heavy metal or dance is your favourite type of music, it isn’t necessarily recommended that you listen to it if you feel anxious. Such fast, aggressive music can actually make you feel worse.

Classical music can help you to relax, while other genres such as pop and jazz can be equally helpful. Pick music that you know and can sing along to, and which reminds you of happier moments in your life.

Have A Cup Of Tea

One of the simplest tips on how to deal with anxiety is to have a cup of tea. If you’re having an anxiety attack, or feel as though one is imminent, a cup of chamomile tea is a great way to keep your nerves in check. Chamomile binds itself to your brain in the same way that drugs such as valium do. You can take it as a supplement, or you can drink it by itself. Either way, it’s a fabulous alternative to caffeine!

Try Your Best

We’d all like to be perfect, and to be the very best at something, but it isn’t always possible. Moreover, constantly trying to be perfect can be damaging for your mind, and can cause stress and anxiety.

Instead of always aiming for number 1, why not just simply do your best? Quit putting yourself under immense pressure and instead settle for the fact that at least you gave it your best shot.

Yell!

It might sound incredibly silly, but spending some time yelling can actually be a great way to manage your anxiety.

One of the symptoms of anxiety is that we often feel trapped inside our own head; nobody can understand us, nobody is listening, and it begins to drive us mad. By yelling (to no one in particular), you will less “trapped inside your own head”. You will be letting out a flood of emotions and releasing the stress within you.

This is actually a fun strategy that, yes, is a bit silly, but which actually works. Try punching pillows, throwing things around (safely!), and screaming in the mirror.
