10 Tips to help you become happier and happier day by day

If you ask someone what would make them happy, a lot of people say something like, winning a lottery, or discovering that a long lost relative they never heard of has left them a fortune, but the odds on those kinds of things happening are stacked against you. That doesn’t mean that you can’t be happy, though, because there are lots of little things that you can do that will have a major effect on your levels of happiness. Happiness really is just a state of mind and, if you decide you want to be happy, you can be. Here are ten things that anyone can do to become a little bit happier every single day.

1. Fake it until it becomes real

You can alter your own state of mind by pretending you are happy, even if you don’t feel that way to start with. Smile at yourself in the mirror in the morning and act like you are cheerful. You’ll be surprised at how quickly you will start to feel happier if you do. When you walk to work, hum a cheerful tune to yourself and that will lift your mood as well.

2. Wake up earlier

Get up earlier in the mornings and you will find that you feel happier all day long. Early in the morning is the best time of day. It’s fresh, it’s clean, and no one is around to bother you. You can get a few chores done, or start work early and get ahead of the game. It will also give you more time to get your mind and body into gear, before the regular hassles of the day start.

3. Count your blessings

Start every day by being grateful for what you have and for the good things that have happened to you. Push the negative thoughts out of your mind and fill it with thoughts of all the amazing things that you have done and the many things that you can be grateful for. Starting your day with gratitude will make life seem a whole lot better than you thought it was and help you face the rest of the day with a smile on your face.

4. Refuse to let other people get you down

Stop listening so much to what other people have to say and don’t let them get you down. You can never control what other people say and do, so leave them to it, and just ignore them. Remember: “Sticks and stones will break bones, but words will never harm you”.

5. Don’t try to be perfect

You can only do your best, so try to start not expecting everything you do to be perfect every time. Sure, it’s a great feeling to know that you have done something really well, but, if you obsess about getting everything spot on, you’ll drive yourself mad! Spend more time doing the things that make you happy and less time fussing over making everything perfect.

6. Help other people

Going out of your way to help other people is a good way to improve your own happiness. Try to get into the habit of doing at least one random act of kindness a day and, we promise you, your own happiness levels will increase.  It doesn’t have to be anything big. Just holding the door open for someone, or helping an elderly person with their bags will do. You’ll find that the smile that you get in return for your kind deed will make you feel a whole lot happier.

7. Learn some new skills

Learn something new every day and it will make you feel like you are growing as a person and making progress. Start going to an evening class, or learn a new skill at home. Learning new skills will give you a greater sense of achievement and that will help you feel happier about life as a whole.

8. Get some exercise

Exercise is not only good for your health; it makes you feel happier too. If you are fit, you will have a lot more energy to enjoy the day and things won’t feel so much of a struggle. Even something as simple as a brisk walk will help keep you fit and makes you feel happier. Exercising also releases feel good hormones in the body that will help to cheer you up.

9. Get enough sleep

It’s hard to feel happy when you are half asleep! Get to bed a bit earlier and you will probably feel a lot happier the next day. To be at your best during the day you need about get hours of quality sleep a night, don’t try to burn the candle at both ends, or it will only make you feel miserable.

10. Make the most of every single day

If you look hard enough, there is something to be happy about in every day. Take more notice of what is going on around and live in the present. Worrying about the future, or regretting the past, don’t get you anywhere, so concentrate on what is happening now and you will be much happier.
