Sometimes, life is hard. It’s so hard that it seems everyone except us is happy.
We all go through rough patches. Life is full of ups and downs. But sometimes, it seems as though the balance is unfairly tipped in the favour of “downs.”
The good news is that, while happiness isn’t a right, it’s possible to obtain if you do more of the right things. Often, the reason we’re unhappy is because we’re doing the wrong things. If you can make a few minor adjustments to your life and your mindset, life really can be a lot brighter.

First things first, sleep is so incredibly important. If you don’t catch enough zzz’s, your hormones might be all out of whack, and it can really affect your mood.
Moreover, who isn’t a big fat grump at work when they’ve only got 4 hours sleep?!
Be kinder to yourself by hitting the sack sooner. You should soon an upturn in your general mood.
Write Down Things You’re Grateful For
When we’re unhappy, we have a tendency to focus on the things that make us unhappy. This makes us even unhappier. It’s a viscous cycle that’s really hard to get out of.
But just as dwelling on the things that make you unhappy makes you even unhappier, focusing on the things that make you happy can make you happy.
However, that sometimes doesn’t work. But what does work is writing down the awesome things you have in your life that you’re massively grateful for.
Try this simple exercise: Take a notepad and pen and jot down 3 things you’re grateful for. Perhaps you’re grateful for the support network you have in your life, your job, your home and so on.
Once you focus on the things you’re grateful for, you’ll suddenly feel more optimistic about the future. Often, the reasons we’re unhappy aren’t permanent. They will pass. Focus on being grateful and you will soon realise that there’s so much in your life to be positive about.
The night sky is a miracle. It’s a wonder. It has the power to move you. To make you feel awe, joy – to make you feel chills.
It also makes you realise that, whatever trivialities are affecting you here on earth, you’re part of such an amazing, grand whole that’s bigger than any of others. The stars in the sky are thousands – millions – of years old. What do our small problems matter in the face of such awe-inspiring vastness?
Spend an evening looking up at the stars and see how it makes you feel about your place in this huge, mysterious universe.
If you’ve never been too big on exercise, it doesn’t matter – simple, moderate exercises like walking more can stimulate you enough to boost your food.

If you already drink lots of coffee, you probably don’t need to drink more – just keep drinking it as you have been doing.
On the other hand, if you enjoy coffee but don’t drink it a lot, try upping your intake. Why? Because caffeine is a stimulant that’s been proven to boost your mood, making you happier.
Caffeine has also been shown to lower depression, and it can also reduce suicidal thoughts in people.
Kick start your day with a cup of Joe and have one or two more as the day goes along.
Go See Nature
Ever heard someone say “I’m at one with nature”?
If you didn’t think it’s possible to be experience oneness with nature – think again.
Being at one with nature is very real, and it’s a great way to boost our mood, according to science.
It’s not hard to see why: Nature is free from the stresses and strains of daily life. There are no notifications, no pings, no pollution, no honking horns – none of the stuff that so absorbs us on a daily basis, causing us stress.
Go for a walk. Go hiking. Breathe in fresh air. Go skinny dipping. Immerse yourself in God’s creation.
See Your Friends and Family More
Does it feel as though you’re spending too much time alone at the moment?
Or perhaps you work so often that you literally never see your friends and family?
Science says that seeing familiar faces more often and sharing laughs and pleasurable experiences with them makes us happier. This is true even for introverts, even if we might not want to admit it!
Write Down How You Feel
Not a writer? You don’t have to be a writer to be able to record your thoughts in a journal.
Recording your thoughts can be a great way to de-stress. By pouring your thoughts onto a page, you’re somehow purging yourself of that which makes you feel anxious. You’re getting it out there and allowing yourself to heal.

Go Help Someone
Is giving a homeless person some change a selfless act if makes you feel good? Who cares?
What matters here is that you’re helping someone and in some way helping yourself, too.

Brighten someones day by giving them a compliment. Give change to a homeless person. Heck, go volunteering if you have the time.
Lastly, a really easy way to boost your happiness is simply to smile more.
Smiling instantly lifts us. Try it – be positive the next time you leave the house and smile at strangers. They’ll smile back, which will also help to boost your mood.
