How To Become A Person With Positive Mental Attitude?
You’ve probably heard the phrase “positive mental attitude.” But what is it? Does it work? Moreover, how do you become a person who has a positive mental attitude towards life?
Positive mental attitude is no doubt something you’ve heard someone say to you at some point in your life. Perhaps one day a friend told you they’re now adopting a positive mental attitude to get them through life, or maybe your mom said the same thing.
The concept of positive mental attitude was first developed way back in 1937 by an American author and entrepreneur called Napoleon Hill. It was his idea that to be successful in any areas of our life, we had to be positive. Essentially, we had to think our way to success.
If you’re a negative person by nature, it’s very difficult to have the level of success you want, and to achieve the dreams you want. There is always an “I can’t” prefacing all of your dreams.
“I can’t meet my Prince Charming.”
“I can’t get a better job.”
Sometimes, you might preface your dreams with “I don’t deserve.”
Once you do this, you’re giving yourself no chance at all of achieving all that you desire.
Positive mental attitude is a very powerful thing. Anyone who is enjoying success in life is doing so because they changed their mindset and adopted a more optimistic outlook. All of a sudden, life was full of opportunities. Failure wasn’t a bad thing anymore – it was just a lesson. There was happiness and wonder. Dreams became fulfilled.
The good thing is that changing your outlook is totally possible. Let’s take a look at how to become a person with a positive mental attitude.
Gratitude is a powerful value that many of us are guilty of not practising. We’re far too busy looking on in envy at other peoples’ lives and bemoaning the fact that we don’t have what they have.
We don’t have our friends new car.
We don’t have our friends eyes.
We don’t have our friends happy marriage.
If you spend most of your time unfairly comparing your life with others, you really will feel inferior and down-at-heel. It’s so important that you take stock of your life every single day to remind yourself of all the amazing things you already have.
You have your health, your friends. You have a home, a family. You have a job, an education.
Write a list of all the things you have to be grateful for, and cherish them. Because there are people in this world who are looking on with envy at you.
Surround Yourself With Positive People
Facebook can sometimes feel like a meeting group for Negative People Anonymous. You look through your newsfeed and all you see are negative comments about the weather, the traffic, jobs, politics, and so on.
It can sure as heck rub off on you, leaving you feeling negative, too.
It’s well worth surrounding yourself with positive people. Follow inspirational people on Facebook. Find motivational people and follow them. Watch their videos in the morning, read their inspiring quotes.
Forget all about your friends status about how she’s been stuck in a traffic jam for two hours and read about how someone achieved their dream.
Remember What You’ve Achieved So Far
If you ask any successful person what success is, and they won’t really tell you what you want to hear.
You might think that success is a dream home in Miami, or a fast car. Success, however, is the journey. It’s what you experience on the journey to your goals, and what you learn.
There really is no end.
So take a moment to think about how far you’ve come already. Stop dwelling on the fact that the future seems to be so far away, and realise that you’ve come so far already. You’re well into your journey. You’ve taken the initial steps. You’ve been to school, graduated, made friends for life, moved out of your parents house, got a job, and now you’re here. You’re here, planning your next chapter.
You’ve come so far already. Remember that.
If You Did It Once, You Can Do It Again
In his memoirs, the great American writer Ernest Hemingway said that during his youth he was dogged by doubt. But then he told himself that whenever he was having trouble writing, he should remember that he had already done it before.
It’s natural to fear doing something. A novelist is wracked with doubts that they can’t write each time they start a novel, just like a job candidate is wracked with doubts that they’re not good at interviews before they go for an interview.
But remember that if you’ve done something once before, it’s in you to do it again. You don’t lose that skill.
This is called drawing upon a reference. If you ever feel negative about yourself, bring up a reference that makes you feel more positive.
Let’s say that you don’t feel smart today. Think back to a time when someone told you that you were smart, or maybe to a time when you got an A in an exam. Use this as your reference.
You’re not alone on this one. Great writers can write bestselling novels and STILL doubt themselves. Every now and then they have to look a their sales to remind them that, yes, they CAN do this.
You’ve done it before, and you can do it again.
Read An Inspiring Book
Another thing that positive, successful people have in common is that a lot of them read. They read because they know that the right kind of knowledge can empower them.
Knowledge really does change lives. The more you know, the more you can do.
Knowledge makes us feel good about ourselves, because it’s the fuel we need to take action.
Pop onto Amazon and shop around for an inspiring book. Ask others what books changed their lives and helped them to become more positive about themselves and the world.
