How to beat the post-Christmas blues? 10 Tips

Sorry guys, Christmas really has finished, for this year anyway! The post-Christmas period, with the thought of losing all that extra weight we put on, and of going back to work, can leave many of us feeling low; so cheer up and read these ten great ways to beat the post-Christmas blues:

1. Eat to be happy

It might be tempting to eat all that leftover chocolate and cake, to cheer yourself up, but you really need to be getting back to something a bit healthier. Try snacking on some mood-improving foods, such as whole grains, fresh and dry fruit and nuts. These foods contain plenty of vitamins, which help the brain produce serotonin.

2. Sort out the finances

Who doesn’t overspend at Christmas? You may not want to face it yet, but the sooner you tackle your finances and get them back on track, the sooner you will be able to relax more. Take a look at where you are and set a budget accordingly and then you will be able to move on and be happier.

3. Get laughing again

Don’t get down that Christmas has passed; get out some funny DVD’s, or read a funny book. Laughter has been proven to be the best mood booster that there is and a few hours of laughter will soon lighten your mood.

4. Look to the future

If you are really down about going back to work, then maybe it’s time to think about changing your job! Take some time to think about why you are feeling low and take the decision to change the things in your life that you dislike. The New Year is coming so, now is the prefect time to do this.

5. De-clutter your home.

Take this as an opportunity to clear out your home of all the unwanted clutter. Out with the old and in with the new, as they say. Start the New Year the way you mean to go on; get organised and get efficient!

6. Get yourself active again

Exercise is a great way to lift your mood, as it releases the feel-good hormones into your body. So, get out into the fresh air for a walk, or a run. It will cheer you up and it’ll help you to start losing some of that extra Christmas weight too.

7. Get out and socialise

One of the best ways to lift your mood is to be with other people that you care about. You can’t possibly have seen everyone that you know at Christmas, so get on the phone and arrange to meet up with some old friends or family members that you didn’t get to see over Christmas.

8. Do something brave

If you need some inspiration and some energy, then step out of your comfort zone and do something brave. Face a fear and set yourself the goal of defeating it and it will lift your mood and inspire you for the New Year.

9. Do something nice for someone else

Take the focus off yourself and do something nice for someone else. Doing some volunteer work or just helping a friend will help take your mind of your own problems and help to get them more in perspective.

10. Be grateful for Christmas

The main reason that people feel low after Christmas is because Christmas is such fun! So, don’t be sad that it’s over, be glad that it was here! And, remember, it’s only twelve months until the next one.
