How to actually stick to your good New Year’s resolutions? 10 Tips

We’ve all done it, we make our New Year’s resolutions, we swear we are going to stick with them and then, before we even get to the end of January, we conveniently forget all about them! If you are making New Year’s resolutions this year, then, here are ten tips on how you can actually stick to those promises that you made to yourself:

1. Only set realistic goals

Set yourself realistic, attainable goals. If you promise yourself that you will never eat chocolate again, then you are quite likely to fail. But, if you resolve to cut down on chocolate, you are far more likely to succeed.

2. List the reasons

Make a list of the all the pros and the cons of your resolution and this will remind you why you are doing it. Whenever you need some extra resolve, just check out the list and it will motivate you to carry on.

3. Limit the number of resolutions

Rather than trying to lose weight, give up smoking and stop drinking alcohol, all at the same time, focus your attention on just one major resolution at a time. They don’t all have to be started at the same time. And, remember, you still have twelve more months for the other ones.

4. Have a plan

Think about how you will avoid temptation, because it will, invariably, come. Decide what you are going to do to distract you, practice positive thinking or have a friend on hand who you can phone when you feel the urge to break your resolution.

5. Track your progress

Whatever you have decided to do, keeping a journal of your success can be a great way to keep you motivated. Break your resolution down into small steps, take it one day at a time and track your progress. This will help you achieve your long term goals.

7. Make your resolutions positive ones

Try and phrase your resolutions in a positive way. It is easier to follow a positive goal, like getting more exercise, or eating healthier food, than it is to follow the negative ones like giving up chocolate or watching less TV.

8. Reward yourself

Don’t forget to reward yourself for your success along the way. Buy yourself a treat, with the money you have saved by giving up something unhealthy. Just be sure that your treat is a healthy treat!

9. Don’t keep your resolutions a secret

Tell everyone you know what your New Year’s resolution is. Friends and family will be able to support you and they will help keep you on track. They also won’t let you forget!

10. Don’t give up!

And finally, whatever you do, don’t give up! If you have a little slip along the way, don’t beat yourself up over it, just get yourself back on track and keep going.
