9 Things to always remember if you want to achieve your goals and dreams
Do you remember December 31st last year? Just after midnight, when you announced to yourself that you were going to lose weight, run a marathon, start your own business or just invest more time in your relationship? Well, if you’re one of the millions of people who have put their new year’s resolutions to one side, at least, for this year, then you might need to read our 9 things to remember that will help you to achieve your goals and ambitions next time, so read on and make some notes!
1. Get crystal clear
Step one on the road to achieving your dreams and ambitions is to set clearly defined goals in the first place. Vague intentions, such as ‘I’m going to lose weight’ or ‘I’m going to get rich’ are simply not achievable, if you don’t also define how many pounds you are going to lose or how much money are you going to make. Set your goal, make it quantifiable, so you know when you get there and make it realistic within the time frame that you have set.
2. Draw up a plan
Now you know where you are going, but how are you going to get there without a map?! So, out next tip on how to achieve your goals and dreams is – make a plan of how you are going to achieve your goals and write it down. Then you will have a benchmark against which you can track your progress towards success.
3. Break it down
On any journey, you will need some milestones along the way to track your progress, so set yours in your plan by breaking down your overall ambition into smaller, achievable mini-goals. If you are looking to lose so many pounds by the end of the year, how many pounds is that going to be per month? If you are looking to set up your own business, what are the steps that you will need to take along the way?
Another great tip to follow, if you want to achieve your goals is commitment. Take positive steps to make a start on your plan and don’t just content yourself with a mental determination on the 31st December! If your goal is to lose weight, then clean out your cupboards at home and throw away all the crisps and other junk food, you’re not going to need it anymore.
5. Don’t try
Our next tip might sound a bit contradictive, but do you remember Yoda from the Star Wars? Yoda said: ‘No. Try not. Do… or do not. There is no try.’ This is the best mindset if you really are serious about achieving your goals and dreams!
6. Tell all your friends about your plan
Publicize your plan to everyone you know, then it will be harder to quit early. You’ll also be amazed at how supportive people can be, when they know that you are striving to achieve your goals and dreams, so help may come from the most unexpected sources.
7. Take, at least, one step every day
Do something! Be sure that you take, at least, one step, however tiny, towards achieving your goals and dreams, every single day. The sum of those little tiny baby steps will eventually add up to you reaching the finish line, so once you’ve started, just keep going.
8. Monitor your progress and celebrate each milestone
As you pass each milestone, write it down in a ‘happy’ journal and be sure to celebrate. Rome wasn’t built in a day, but you can bet they had a party to celebrate their achievements along the way. It’s important to map out your progress as this will give you a great incentive, when things get tough, as you look back and see how far you’ve come.
9. If plan A didn’t work out, there are 25 other letters in the alphabet!
Be prepared to modify your plan. Things change and the unexpected does occur, so don’t be afraid of modifying your plan to fit the current circumstances. If you’ve got flu today, then you won’t be running the marathon tomorrow, but don’t throw your plans away, just modify the timescale and run the marathon next year instead.
