7 Thought provoking questions you should ask yourself every now and again

Few people get the opportunity to start over again and there are many things in life that we simply can’t change very easily. But taking stock of where you’re at can be a useful exercise and it can help you to develop an outline plan of where you want to go from here.

In this simple exercise, we invite you to ask some searching questions of yourself. Take your time and perhaps write your answers down. A cursory read of the questions won’t help at all, but a bit of serious soul searching might point you in some exciting new directions.

1. What would you really like to do to earn a living?

We tend to classify ourselves and others as what we do for a living, rather than who we are. He’s Bob the Builder, She’s Beatrice the Beautician or I’m Wendy the waitress, so if you could do any job you want, what would it be and why aren’t you doing it right now?

2. When did you last try something new?

When was the last time you tried something that you’ve never done before? Why don’t you book those skydiving lessons or what’s stopping you enrolling on that part time college course you’ve been thinking about?

3. When were you last kind to yourself?

You may be great at showing kindness to others, but when did you last show some to yourself? Are you too harsh on yourself, always working, always busy, when did you last do something just because you wanted to?

4. What had you really achieved yesterday?

Sometimes we are so busy racing around just doing ‘things’, that we actually achieve very little. One day seems to roll seamlessly into the next and you look back and wonder where all that time went to. Achievement doesn’t just mean money. When did you last do a bit of volunteering work, learn a new skill or visit a new place?

5. How do you think other people perceive you?

We all have our own self-image, but this can be very different from how others see us. Put yourself in their shoes for a moment and think about how you would have felt about the way that you spoke to them.

6. Who do you love and what have you done to show it?

Make a list of your family and friends and include, of course, your partner and note down something nice that you have done for them in the last few weeks. If you’re struggling with this, it might be time to actually let someone know that you care.

7. Are you hanging on to things that should be let go?

Have you still got that old pair of shoes in the wardrobe that you never wear? Are you still with that guy you really don’t like? ‘Better the devil you know’ is the usual excuse, but sometimes it’s better to kick that devil into touch and start anew.

Life’s a journey, or so they say, but it’s not just about getting from A to B as quickly as possible; so stop, get the map out and see what other routes are available, a bit of a detour might do you good.
