10 Useful Tips On How To Stop Being Lonely Right Now

At some point in life, we all like a bit of time to ourselves. But if you’ve found that you’ve recently had too much time to yourself, and are starting to feel lonely, it’s high time that you sought a few pick-me-ups to lift your spirits. Check out our 10 useful tips on how to stop being lonely, and how to give your life a much needed boost today.

1. Remind Yourself That Loneliness Is Simply A Feeling – Not A Fact

When you feel lonely, it is easy to feel as though are you factually alone. But this is not the case! Often, when we feel alone it is because something has triggered this feeling, and because our brain is designed in such a way that it focuses on scary feelings, such as loneliness, so that we feel this sense of loneliness more acutely. But by reminding yourself that it really is just a feeling and not a fact, you can work on ways to resolve the issue of loneliness.

2. Reach Out To People

Another tip on how to stop being lonely is to reach out to other people. If you’ve been suffering from a lengthy bout of loneliness, it’s easy to withdraw into yourself and think that you’re a loser and an outcast. When we feel lonely, our self-esteem can take a hit. But this is very counterproductive and it just increases our woes. Whenever you start to feel lonely, the healthiest thing you can do is to reach out to other people; call your friends and family, and ask to hang out. Go out for dinner, have a coffee.

3. Log Out Of Facebook – And Get Outside

Our next tip on how to stop being lonely is to log out of Facebook and get outside. Facebook can be the absolute worst retreat when we’re feeling lonely, because looking at the smiley, happy photos of our friends can make us feel even worse. So rather than checking out all those wedding pics and baby photos, you should log out of Facebook and head outdoors for a walk and some fresh air.

4. Get Inspired By A YouTube Video

Articles such as this are all well and good, but if you watch some inspiration videos on YouTube, you might just have the motivation you’ve been looking for to add an injection of productivity to your life. Videos such as the Ted talks are awesome ways of motivating us to do inspiring things, and if you’re feeling lonely and consequently have a bit of time on your hands, doing inspiring things is not only something you can do alone – but it can also put you in touch with new people.

5. Do Things By Yourself

Ever wanted to catch a movie at the cinema but found that everyone is too busy to go and watch it with you? And so rather than go alone, you stay in and wallow in your thoughts…

To lift yourself out of loneliness, there is no reason why you can’t do social activities by yourself. Take yourself out on a date! It might seem awkward to go to a restaurant or the cinema by yourself, but these kinds of negative thoughts just hold you back. Think about it: would you rather spend time in the cinema watching that movie you’ve been wanting to see, or get stuck at home nursing another cup of coffee, whilst Jerry Springer plays out on the TV?

6. Start A Blog

Another tip on how to stop being lonely is to start a blog. Blogging is for everyone. You can do it, I can do it, even our mothers can do it. Blogging is a great thing to do when you’re feeling lonely, because it instantly connects you with other people. You can write about a subject you’re passionate about, and you never know, it might trigger a number of exciting conversations for you to get your teeth into.

Bloggers can also make loads of money and they get invited to parties. Just saying.

7. Get A Pet

If, for example, you’ve moved to a new city and don’t know anybody, one of the best ways you can find companionship is by adopting a pet from the local animal shelter. Winning the affection of a pet can be a hugely rewarding experience, and it can make you feel loved and wanted. It will also give you something to do with your time – and it will give you someone to hug and dote on.

8. Think About Others

Another good tip on how to stop being lonely is to start thinking about other people. When you’re lonely, it’s easy to focus on yourself and the present state of your life. It’s easy to magnify your emotional feelings, and it’s easy to feel down. But if you pop out of the house and take a look at other people, you can begin to switch your thoughts to them. By thinking about others and taking into account their lives, you begin to develop a kind of empathy that just makes you thankful to be alive and sharing your town or city with such a diverse group of people. Even better, you can offer strangers a smile – you’ll be surprised at how much better it feels, especially when they smile back.

9. Find New People

Okay, we’re not telling you to walk into the city, scan the surroundings and grab someone you like before saying, “Hey! You’re my NEW friend! Want a latte?” But there are online websites and apps, such as Meetups, that are an excellent way of meeting new, like-minded people who are just as awesome as you.

10. Read

Reading is a solitary practice, but we’d like to argue that it is the solitary practice. Even if you don’t read, you should try it. Losing yourself in a book is a fantastic way of passing the time and escaping into someone else’s world, and it helps you forget the fact that you’re lonely for a few hours. And if the book is educational, such as a non-fiction book, you might even get to learn a few new awesome things.
