How to become happier? 10 Unusual things that will bring more joy into your life
Do you remember how easy it was to find joy when you were a kid? When you could spend hours doing nothing important, and still have a load of fun? Then, we grow a bit older, we take on responsibilities, and many of us seem to lose that ability to find joy in even the simplest things. There are ways that you can regain that feeling once more, though. You don’t need to travel the world or take up an extreme sport to feel joy; you can find it in some of the most surprising places. Read on and find out more about ten unusual things that could bring more joy into your life and how to become happier.
1. Stop working 24/7
Did you used to worry about school once you got home? No, of course you didn’t and that could well be the first lesson about joy that the kids could teach us. Don’t check your work email on weekends, or in the evenings, there won’t be anything there that can’t wait until the next working day. Draw a line under the working day and switch off, and then you will be able to enjoy your free time properly.
2. Go and buy yourself a book
Next useful tip on how to become happier is to go and buy a good book, then lock yourself away somewhere and read it! Books are the best way there is to broaden your mind, learn new things and to escape for a while.
3. Lie down in a field for a while
Take a drive out into the country, find a deserted field, and go find a spot to lie down and take in the sights and the sounds of nature. Laying back and watching the clouds float by will give you a whole new perspective on life and it might bring you some new ideas too.
4. Get creative
You can find joy in the simple act of creating things too. You don’t need to be a Picasso to paint, nor a Shakespeare to be able to write a poem, just create something that you can call your own, out of nothing, and that can bring you joy.
5. Work out what really matters to you and get rid of the rest!
Another great tip on how to become happier is to stop doing what other people want you to do, and start doing things to please yourself. OK, so we can’t always do exactly what we’d like to do, but you certainly shouldn’t spend your whole life trying to please other people. Make your own happiness a priority too, and set aside more time for you.
6. Crank the windows of your car and put the music up
Go out in the car, wind down the windows, turn up the volume on your favourite music and drive. Just let go, have some fun and feel free again. It doesn’t matter if people look at you, just smile and give them a wave. If they have forgotten how to have fun then that’s their problem!
7. Do something amazing for someone else
Next great tip on how to become happier it to do something wonderful for someone else. How many times have walked past a homeless person and given them nothing, or perhaps just your loose change. What about giving them a coat, or a burger and fries, and just taking the time to talk to them? You can make a huge amount of difference to someone’s day, for very little cost to you, and it will make you feel great too.
8. Give yourself permission to have fun
Is it you who are actually stopping yourself feeling joy? Many people actually feel guilty about doing nothing, or doing things that are just for their own benefit. You may well be very busy and have lots of things that you ‘should’ be doing, but give it a break and give yourself permission to have some fun occasionally. Release yourself from any guilt that you might feel and just get on with finding that joy again.
9. Let yourself dream
Next important tip on how to become happier is to look for joy and you will find it. Don’t be afraid to imagine your wildest dreams coming true and don’t be scared to chase your dreams. You can actually teach your brain that joy is a good thing and then, you will find that your brain will start to look for it. There’s no harm in dreaming sometimes and remember, more often than not, dreams do come true.
10. Go out and play with the kids
If you want to re-live the joy that you felt as a child, then go and play with some children. Get down on your hands and knees and play games with your own kids, or babysit for a friend. Let your inhibitions go and pretend to be a princess again, or whatever other game they come up with. You can find true joy, when you forget all your adult responsibilities, stresses and worries, even if it only lasts for a short amount of time.
