10 Things happy people do before going to bed
We all know that getting a good night’s sleep is important, but what you do in the last few hours before you go to bed is important too. What you do before you go to bed can mean the difference between a night of peaceful slumber and a night of tossing and turning. If you get into a routine of preparing yourself for sleep, you will sleep better and wake more refreshed and happy, so read these ten things that happy people do before going to bed that mean they wake up in the morning with a smile on their face.
1. Wind down and relax
People who sleep well know how important it is to wind down and relax before your bedtime. Some people take a hot bath, while others have a favourite bedtime hot drink they enjoy. They all have a night time routine that prepares their mind and their body for sleep. You can’t sleep properly if you go to bed with your mind racing; you need that hour or two to wind down first.
2. Switch off the technology
Happy people know when to call it a day on the computers and cell phones too. If you don’t switch off all the technology early, you could end being on it all night, so log off a few hours before you go to bed. Whatever it is that is waiting for you, it will still be there tomorrow, so leave it until then.
3. Go for a walk
Instead of sitting there updating Facebook, or answering emails, a lot of people find that a gentle evening stroll is the perfect way to unwind. A walk is good for your health and it will put you in a better mood. It also gives you a chance to clear your mind, which will help you sleep much better.
4. Write a journal
Happy people keep journals because it gives them a way of offloading all their fears, concerns and negative thoughts. Writing down the things that are troubling you, before you go to bed, will mean that you can forget those things for the night and, if need be, tackle them again in the morning. It’s also useful to prepare a to-do list for the next day, so that you can sleep soundly in the knowledge that you have everything under control.
5. Forgive those that have hurt them
Happy people are not ones to hold onto grudges, they know that there is nothing to be gained from that. They would rather forgive people that have done them wrong and then they can forget about it and get a good night’s sleep. Just because someone has hurt them or let them down, they won’t let it ruin their life.
Some people set aside some time in the evening for a quiet period of meditation before they go to sleep. It has been proven that regular meditation can help to reduce stress, lowers your risk of getting depressed and even lowers your chances of suffering a heart attack or stroke. Meditating is a great way to clear your mind and calm your thoughts, so you are in the right state of mind for a peaceful night’s sleep.
7. Take stock of the day
The evenings are the time for reflection on the day too. You can think about the things that you do right and consider what you may have done wrong, or could have done better. It will help you understand better what you need to do tomorrow to achieve your goals, so you won’t have sleepless night worrying about it.
8. Feel gratitude
Happy people are grateful for the things that they have and they count their blessings before they go to sleep. This is something that you can try in the last few minutes before you go to sleep. Lie back, close your eyes, and thank the people who have helped you during the day and be thankful for things like the food you had to eat and the roof you have over your head. Filling your head with gratitude will make you feel more positive and that positivity will still be with you in the morning when you wake up.
Happy people usually have a book by their bedside too. Half an hour of reading of a good book relaxes the mind and gets your imagination working. It can fill you with inspiration and positive thoughts that will stay with you through the night.
10. They make the bedroom a place for sleeping
Happy people make their bedrooms a warm and cosy place to be. They make sure their bed is as comfortable as it can be, they block out all the light and they keep the room at just the right temperature. When their head hits the pillow, they are ready for sleep and nothing in their bedroom is going to ruin that for them.
