10 Important reasons to listen to your inner voice
Do you always do what other people say you should do, even when something inside you tells you they are wrong? If you do, then that’s a sign that you are blocking out what your inner voice is telling and ignoring your own instincts. It’s something that a lot of us do, because we have come to believe that other people are smarter than we are, so we assume that they know best. It also comes about because we have come to believe that following what we think is the logical path, will always be better than following a gut feeling. Very often, though, those subconscious gut feelings you get are giving you good advice. Here are ten very important reasons why you should listen more often to what your inner voice is telling you.
1. It’s your life
This is probably the most compelling of all the reasons why you should listen to your inner voice. It’s your life, so you should call the shots! It can take a bit of practice to learn how to listen what your sixth sense is telling you. You need to sit quietly, think things through, and learn to ignore the many other conflicting pieces of advices you may be getting. Never forget, though, you are the only person who really knows what is best for you.
2. Not everyone has your best interest at heart
When you get advice from other people, you never really know for sure if the advice they are giving you is for your benefit, or their own. People can be very persuasive and they can also be very cunning. They might be telling you that going down a particular route will make you happy, but really, they are looking after number one.
3. Your inner voice knows you better than anyone else does
Another thing that you have to remember is that, when people give you advice, they are usually telling you what they would do in the same circumstances, not what they think would make you happy. Your inner voice knows you far better than anyone else ever could. It knows all your secrets, and you deep rooted fears, and it knows, better than anyone else, what will make you happy.
4. Your inner voice is based on a natural instinct
There are certain things that we know will be bad for us, almost from birth. We don’t need anyone to tell us that falling from a great height is going to hurt, we just instinctively know it. We naturally recoil from danger. That’s your natural instinct that is sending you a message and that comes from the same place that your inner voice does. It’s all a part of your natural defence mechanism.
5. Because you will regret if you don’t
How many times have you heard people say things like ‘I knew I never should have dated that guy’ or ‘I knew this would happen’? We’ve all done it, we’ve ignored our gut feeling and done something anyway, and, we’ve all probably lived to regret not taking notice of what our inner voice was trying to tell us.
6. Your inner voice will take you to more exciting places
If you obeyed pure logic all the time, you’d never step outside your own front door! Your inner voice will keep you safe, but it will also push you on to do new things. It’s your inner voice that will tell you to follow your dreams and that’s because it knows what you really want.
7. You will feel more in control
Listening to your inner voice will also make you feel more self-confident, because it puts you firmly in control of your own destiny. Instead of being pulled from here to there by everybody else’s opinions, you will have your own firm direction to follow.
8. It will give you more options
Your inner voice can sometimes see more than you can. Perhaps you might be looking for a job in the same field as the last one, because that’s what you’ve always done, whereas your inner voice might be telling you ‘Hey, let’s try something new’. There’s always more than one way to look at everything and it’s your inner voice that will help you do that.
9. It will keep you out of harm’s way
It’s your inner voice that tells you not walk down that dark street in your own, or to ease off the gas when you are driving. You and get those feelings at the strangest of moments and sometimes they don’t make any sense at all. Science still can’t explain what is going on in these moments, but many people have reported how it was their inner voice that saved them from harm.
10. Because it is right more often than it is wrong
That little voice inside your head is usually asking a lot of sense, if you just take the time to listen to it. Facts, figures, and analysis can only tell you so much, and, eventually, you will simply have to go with that gut feeling. Listening to your inner voice can help you make better decision and make them faster, so start paying more attention to it, because it’s usually right.
