10 Quotes That Will Motivate You To Follow Your Dreams
I’ve been hearing a lot about chasing dreams recently.
“Follow your dreams!” people say.
“If you don’t plan your life, other’s will fit you into theirs!”
“We all want the good life, but most of us aren’t prepared to make it happen!”
In 2016, following your dreams is easier than ever before. Thanks to the rapid improvement of technology, there is literally nothing stopping you from living the life you love.
Except YOU of course.
A few years ago, I was in a bit of a rut. I had huge dreams in my head, but I didn’t have the strength or motivation needed to actually achieve these dreams. Instead, I dawdled at work. I continued making money for other people and enhanced their dreams, while my own stayed firmly locked up inside my head.
One day, I read a few inspiring quotes. It might sound silly, but these quotes motivated me to take action. They were exactly what I needed at that moment to shake me out of my malaise and force me into doing something with my life.
Quotes are really powerful, and they can even change lives. I’m going to share with you 10 of my favourite quotes that will motivate you to follow your dreams. Pin them to your wall, write them on your arm, stick them on your desktop. Surround yourself with them so that they are always there to remind you that you need to live the life you love!
“It’s precisely the possibility of realising a dream that makes life interesting.”
– Paulo Coelho
Wouldn’t life be supremely colourless without dreams? It is dreams that excite us and make us get out of bed early in the morning full of vim and vigour.
Add some thrill to your life each day by chasing your dreams.
“People who lack the clarity, courage or determination to follow their own dreams will often find ways to discourage yours. Live your truth and don’t EVER stop!”
– Steve Maraboli
What Steve is saying here is that we can sometimes be discouraged from following our own dreams because those nearest to us (friends and family) don’t believe in following their own dreams.
“It’s pointless,” they say. “It’ll never happen.”
Their negativity can easily rub onto you, causing you to look at your own dreams and agree that they sound ridiculous too.
“Yeah. It’ll never happen,” you say sadly.
Stop listening to negative people. Be your own person and prove that dreams can come true if you want them hard enough.
“So many people will tell you ‘no’, and you need to find something you believe in so hard that you just smile and tell them ‘watch me.’ Learn to take rejection as motivation to prove people wrong. Be unstoppable. Refuse to give up, no matter what. It’s the best skill you can ever learn.”
– Charlotte Eriksson
I love this quote. Charlotte is absolutely right when she says that you need to thrive on adversity – such as rejection. If someone doesn’t believe in you, don’t use it as the first opportunity to get discouraged and give up. Use it as fuel to come back stronger and prove everyone wrong.
“You can get what you want or you can just get old.”
– Billy Joel
I love Billy Joel! And I love what he says here. I have this solitary sentence framed above my bed because it reminds me each day that I can either wait until retirement for my pension and maybe a little bonus at the end of the rainbow – or I can take action now and have everything I’ve ever wanted.
I have doubts like everyone else. Sometimes I think I should just give up. But when I see this quote, it reminds me that I have two choices: Victory or submission. I always choose victory.
“Never be ashamed! There will be some who will hold it against you, but they are not worth bothering with.”
– J.K. Rowling
Author J.K. Rowling certainly chased a big dream when she began writing the Harry Potter books. She had no idea how successful she would be, but she was prepared to stake her future on her writing. And she won.
People will tell you not to do this. They’ll try to run you down by pouring cold water over your dreams. Don’t listen to them. If they won’t encourage you to better yourself, move on from them.
“Remember how far you’ve come, and you won’t have to rely on a destiny for your future. It will come on your own.”
– Shannon A. Thompson
This quote reminds me of something Ernest Hemingway once wrote. He said that sometimes during his fledgling years as a young writer learning his trade he would wake up and struggle with self doubt. Sometimes the words just wouldn’t come. But he didn’t panic. He reminded himself that he had written well in the past, and so he will write again in the future. It will come.
The same is true of following your dreams. So many of us sigh and give up, saying “I can’t do it.” Remind yourself how much you’ve already done, and you’ll be ready to take on new challenges. If you can do something once – you can do it twice.
“The only thing worse than starting something and failing … is not starting something.”
– Seth Godin
Sure, you will make mistakes on your journey. But a mistake is not the end, it’s just a learning curve.
Be the person who gets there eventually, rather than the person who is still at the starting line.
“Following your dreams is better than being led by your fears.”
– Manor Arora
Ain’t this the truth? Dreams might sometimes seem silly and unrealistic. They might seem impossible to achieve. But, hey, it’s much better that we follow them than let fear lead us down a dark, unsettling path where everyone settles for second best!
“Press on. Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent.”
– Ray Kroc
McDonald’s founder Ray Kroc knows more than most about doggedly following your dreams right to the end. He was well into middle-age before he finally got his big break after spending years as a travelling salesman.
If you persist enough, you will eventually win.
“Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do.”
– Steve Jobs
Why do entrepreneurs work such long hours? Because they love what they do!
As Steve Jobs rightly points out, work will form a huge part of your life. The question is: Do you want to settle for what you have right now and wait until retirement for a bit of happiness?
Or do you want to be happy all the time?
