When you really think about it, it isn’t the big things in life that makes us happy. Expensive cars, big houses with swimming pools and a vacation to Hawaii are okay, but they are things to enjoy in the moment. After a year, our new car is already “old”, we’re bored of swimming in the pool and Hawaii is a distant memory.

Instead, it’s the little things in life that can bring rays of happiness to our life each and every day. Let’s take a look at 10 of these beautiful little things.

Finding Money In Your Pocket That You Never Knew You Had

The unparalleled joy we feel whenever we dig our hands into our trouser pockets that we haven’t worn for six months, only to pull out some cash is amazing.

Usually, we find this treasure chest on bad days when we’re hard up for money. Therefore, finding some loose change – even if it’s just $5 – brightens up our day. All of a sudden, we get giddy about being able to treat ourselves to a nice coffee, knowing that the money we’re spending is money we didn’t even know we had.

Watching The Rain Fall Outside When You Know You Don’t Have To Leave The House

Is there anything worse than waking up at 7am on a Monday morning, knowing you’ve got to go to work in the pouring rain? It’s enough to make you shiver and phone in sick.

On the flip side, waking up at 7am on a Monday morning knowing you don’t have to leave the house on this frightfully wet day is a reason to rejoice and be happy. You can sit up in bed with a fresh cup of coffee with your blankets wrapped around you, knowing that you don’t have to join everyone else in the battle against the elements. Secondly, because you know you’re eating something that is good for your body, you instantly feel happier about yourself and life in general. You know you’re eating the right foods.

Playing With A Child Who Likes You

Kids have a lot of power. When we play with kids who are unresponsive and look at us as though we’re aliens, our self-esteem can go down. But when we play with kids who respond to us with laughter and a smile, we feel amazing. We think we’re the most awesome person on the planet!

A Long Shower

Sometimes, all it takes to make us feel happier is a long, refreshing shower that relaxes us and removes all the sweat and grease that has been bothering us all day long.

Days can get long and drawn out, and whenever we feel tired after too much time spent in the office, nothing says happiness like a relaxing shower. All that water streaming down your face, neck and body is washing away all your stress and cares, as well as the grime that has built up over the day. Lovely.

Catching Up With Old Friends

Whether you’re a person who gets sentimental about the past or not, catching up with old friends you haven’t seen for over ten years is sure to bring you the feeling of happiness. Reminiscing about old, careless times when your only responsibilities were making sure you got out of bed before noon really can make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside, and it can take you away from any stress or woes you’re experiencing at the moment.

An Extra Half Hour In Bed

The worst time of the day is undoubtedly the time you have to get up in the morning. But when you look at your clock for a second time and realise that you still have another half an hour until it’s time to get up, well, that’s just amazing! You can turn over and relax in bed, enjoying the warmth of your blankets and pretending that work is still aaaaages away yet.

Doing Nothing

In 2015, we believe that happiness can only be had if we’re constantly doing something. If we have no plans and no one to see, we assume that we’re going to be miserable and bored.

But you should embrace the days where there is nothing to do, and no one to see. Enjoy this downtime and do something simple by yourself. Take a walk, go for a jog, visit the ocean, enjoy an ice cream in the park. You don’t always have to be active; in fact, your mind and body will thank you for this rest.

Being Kind To Others

Fewer things can bring us happiness in quite the same way that bringing happiness to others can. Being kind to strangers or even people you know not only brightens their day, but it also brightens yours. And if you’re asking the question, “But what do I get out of this?”, just try a random act of kindness and see how warm and happy you feel.
