10 Inspirational Sayings By Marilyn Monroe

For many of us, Marilyn Monroe is the ultimate inspiration. She was beautiful, glamorous, talented and never afraid to speak her mind. She knew what she wanted out of life, and she made sure that she got it. She was also a well-read person who enjoyed poetry, plays and literature.

And she had a lot to say.

But like the rest of us, she was also unashamedly human. Never afraid to expose her vulnerability, she was capable of inspiring others thanks to her humanity and her ‘never say die’ attitude in the face of adversity. She was inspired but troubled. Success didn’t come easy, and she had to work hard for it. There were ups and downs – just like there are ups and downs for all of us. But wherever she went, Marilyn smiled that gorgeous smile.

I grew up watching Marilyn Monroe movies, such as Some Like It Hot. I wanted to follow in her footsteps and become an actress. Although that dream never quite came true, Marilyn has remained my inspiration. So here is a collection of her quotes that hopefully can inspire you today. Here are 10 inspirational sayings by Marilyn Monroe.

“We are all of us stars, and we deserve to twinkle”

     – Marilyn Monroe

This is probably my all-time favourite Marilyn Monroe quote and it’s something I read whenever I feel as though life has kicked me down.

Essentially, the world should not be divided between those who can dream and those who can’t. Nobody should be told they can’t have a dream! Every single one of us – from the very rich to the very poor – deserve a shot at greatness. If you can dream it, you can do it.

We are all human beings who deserve to shine, to captivate, and to achieve. If a girl like Marilyn can make it, so can you.

“Wanting to be someone else is a waste of the person you are.”

     – Marilyn Monroe

Sure, we sometimes wish we were someone else. But in obsessing over this, we’re overseeing ourselves and our own greatness.

Be grateful for what you have. Write down a list of your talents and abilities. Remind yourself that, just as you wish you were someone else, someone wishes they were like you.

You’re blessed. Please realise this.

“Keep smiling, because life is a beautiful thing and there’s so much to smile about.”

     – Marilyn Monroe

I know that sometimes it’s hard to smile. We’ve all had bad days, weeks, months and even whole years where nothing seems to have gone right.

But I ask you now: Why focus on all the negatives?

Sure, bad things happen. But by focusing on the bad things, we ignore all the good stuff.

We only get one life, so there is really no point in being a pessimist who sees only futility, hopelessness and desperation. Why waste it like that?

If you’re willing to look for the positives, you will find them. And when you do, you will smile.

“Just because you fail once doesn’t mean you’re gonna fail at everything.”

     – Marilyn Monroe

Failure doesn’t mean game over. Far from it. Failing just means you got it wrong the first time around. All you need to do is learn from your mistakes and come back stronger next time.

“Sometimes, things fall apart so that better things can fall together.”

     – Marilyn Monroe

Life doesn’t always go the way we plan it. But that’s the problem with planning – we’re setting ourselves up for disappointment.

It’s like when you head out on a first date. You’re super excited to meet the guy, and perhaps you’ve fixed it in your head that the date is going to go so well that maybe eventually you’ll even get married.

But life doesn’t always work this way. Sometimes things deviate from the script. They go wrong.

At this point, you can either admit defeat and sulk.

Or, you can embrace uncertainty and see what’s around the corner.

The greatest opportunities often fall into our laps when we least expect them.

“It’s better to be absolutely ridiculous than absolutely boring.”

     – Marilyn Monroe

I LOVE this one. It reminds me of the Charles Bukowski quote: “Some people never go crazy. What truly horrible lives they must lead.”

Sure, some people might think you’re crazy. But who cares? At least you’re not boring! At least you’re living your life, enjoying yourself and entertaining people. You’re here for the ride, you’re here to have a great time.

And you don’t care what the squares think of you.

“If I’d observed all the rules, I’d never have got anywhere.”

    – Marilyn Monroe

I’m being playful, but imagine if Adam had never eaten the apple Eve offered him. The world would be a very boring place!

Rules are meant to be broken. If you don’t break rules – including the ones you’ve imposed upon yourself – how can you ever know what is really out there?

It’s a bit cheeky of Marilyn to suggest that we break – or at least bend – the rules, but I have to agree with her.

There are, of course, some rules that you should never break. But there will be times in your life when you need to be a bit of a rebel in order to find out more about yourself, as well as find your true destination and calling in life.

It’s safer to stick to the rules – but not exactly exciting.

“In spite of everything, life is not without hope.”

     – Marilyn Monroe

Life can seem pretty hopeless sometime. Whether you’ve been turned down by a job or a first date doesn’t want to see you again, it’s easy to give up and just remain within your comfort zone.

Marilyn suffered many trials and tribulations, too. But she never gave up hope. She knew that fate is mostly kind. You just have to be a little bit patient sometimes and learn from your mistakes.

“You never know what life is like until you’ve lived it.”

     – Marilyn Monroe

There is a great quote – I can’t remember who said it – that life is what other people are enjoying.

When I was in my early twenties and afflicted with anxiety, reading the quote hit me hard. It was both powerful and poignant and it woke me from my slumber. For too long, I had been silently watching as life passed me by.

Unless you take action, you’re not really experiencing life and all that it has to offer. You’re missing out on the pleasure of the small details, as well as the roller coaster excitement of the big opportunities.

Sometimes, we’re too afraid of failure. So we miss out on first dates, new jobs etc. But shying away from these things just means you’re losing out. You’re missing the thrill of life.

Sure, there will be disappointments and losses. But that’s part of life. That’s what makes it what it is.

“All a girl really wants from a guy is for him to prove to her that they are not all the same.”

     – Marilyn Monroe

Marilyn got married a few times and had numerous relationships. She had to take the rough with the smooth, and not every man treated her right.

Like all of us, she just wanted that one guy to come along and prove to her that there are good men out there.

Isn’t that what we all want?
