10 Beauty Hacks on How to Wear Dark Lipstick like a Pro
If you have never worn dark lipstick before, the idea of switching your nude and your light coloured lipstick for a dark, vampy shade can be a bit daunting. If you want to give it a go, you don’t need to dive straight in at the deep end with a really deep burgundy or a dark purple that is bordering on black; you can just get yourself used to the look with some deeper, more vibrant shades of what you are already used to wearing. To help you get started, here’s our guide – makeup hacks you will need to know if you want to wear dark lipstick like a pro.
1. Exfoliate and prep
Dark lipstick will show up any loose flakes of skin on your lips, so preparation is vital when you wear the deeper shades. To prep your lips for dark lipstick, gently exfoliate them first, to remove any loose flakes of skin, and then apply some lip balm to moisturise and soften your lips. That will give you a nice, smooth canvas onto which you can apply your dark shade of lipstick.
2. Line your lips
If dark lipstick bleeds outside of the lip line, it will be a lot more noticeable than a light shade of lipstick would be, so line your lips before you apply the lipstick. You can use a lip liner in the same shade as your lipstick to do this, or you could use a nude liner. Alternatively, if you are feeling adventurous, you could use a slightly darker shade to line your lips and create a bit of contrast.
3. Fill in your lips
Now it’s time to fill in your lips with your daring darkest shade. Apply the lipstick with a lipstick brush, inside the lines you drew with the liner. Using a brush will make it easier to apply the lipstick accurately. Then, blot your lips, apply another coat of colour, and then blot again. If you made any mistakes, you can use a bit of concealer to tidy up the outside lines.
4. Keep your lips pulled tight
When you apply your lipstick, keep your lips pulled tight and that will ensure that you get an even covering lipstick on your lips. If you keep your lips relaxed, you will find that, when you smile, you will be able to see lighter areas of lipstick in the creases of your lips and that shows up even more with dark lipstick.
5. Keeping the lipstick off your teeth
To keep dark lipstick from sticking to your teeth, pop one finger in your mouth, gently close your lips around it, and then pull your finger out. Any excess lipstick that would have otherwise ended up your teeth will now be on your finger.
6. Keep eye makeup low-key
When you have bold lips, it is a good idea to keep your eye makeup minimal, because you will want your lips to be the main attraction and not be in completion with your eyes. Keeping your eyes simple, with just a modest amount of eyeliner, mascara, and a fairly neutral eyeshadow, will stop you looking too made up.
Dark lipstick can make your face look pale, especially if you already have a fair complexion. The best way to counter this is to give your face a bit more colour with some bronzer and some blush on your cheeks. That will have the effect of making the contrast between your lipstick and the rest of your face not quite so stark.
8. Skip the gloss
There is nothing wrong with a glossy dark lip colour, if that’s what you want, but it can look a bit too much on some people. A dark shade of lipstick usually looks bold enough without gloss, so try a matte look to start with and see what you think. An alternative would be to apply some gloss just in the centre of your lips.
9. Work your way up to the dark shades
If you have been used to corals and pinks, you might find the very dark shades of lipstick a bit too much to begin with. Dark lipstick is very striking and it does take some courage to wear it. Mostly, it’s just a case of getting used to seeing yourself with dark lips, so ease your way in with some berry shades to start with and that will make the change a bit easier
10. Wear it with confidence
There is no doubt that dark lipstick is something of a statement and the best way to pull it off is to wear with confidence. Wear it like you mean it and don’t be shy about your new look. Then, when people look at you, they will be admiring your boldness and your individuality, and they will be wondering if they could pull it off themselves.
