It is a fact that many people who quit smoking experience some weight gain, but this is as much as a result of people eating more to take their minds of cigarettes, than it has to do with any weight loss properties of tobacco. Let’s be blunt about it, smoking causes some horrible diseases, which will make you lose weight, and you don’t even want to think about that! No one can pretend that they don’t know about the harmful effect that smoking can have your body. So here, we look at some of the lesser known facts about smoking:

1. It’s not the nicotine that is harmful

Some people use the excuse that nicotine replacement treatments are just as harmful, as smoking as an excuse to not try and quit. This is completely untrue. Nicotine, by itself, is relatively safe, it’s the thousands of other compounds in cigarettes, including over 50 carcinogens, that do the harm.

2. Cutting back is just as bad as not quitting at all

Studies have found that cutting back on the number of cigarettes doesn’t have much, if any, health benefit for smokers. Although, for some, cutting back can be the first step toward quitting, researchers found that smokers who do cut back tend to draw more deeply on cigarettes and smoke them right to the end, so they are getting just as much dangerous smoke in their body, as they were before they cut back.

3. You can’t counteract the effects of smoking with a healthy diet

Some people believe that if they adopt and otherwise healthy lifestyle, then smoking will not have the same bad effect on them. This has been proven to be completely wrong. Smoking effects just about every organ in the body and there is no diet or lifestyle choices that you can adopt that will counteract the harmful effects of smoking.

4. The numbers of smokers are reducing

All of the advertising campaigns and other no smoking measures that have been put in place are slowly having a positive effect. The number of smokers is America, for examples, has dropped from 45% of the population in 1965 to just about 20% today.

5. Light cigarettes are no better for you

Cigarettes labelled as ‘light’, are no better for you than the regular ones. They do contain less tar and other harmful substances, but smokers who switch to light cigarettes tend to smoke more of each cigarette to compensate for the lower nicotine.

Believe it or not, some doctors used to recommend that their patients who were suffering from stress take up smoking as a way to alleviate their symptoms.

7. It’s never too late to quit

Another reason that some people give for not giving up smoking is that it’s too late, the damage and been done. The fact is that whatever age you are, giving up smoking can extend your life. If you are 50 years old and you quit today, you will halve your chances of dying of a smoking related disease. If you quit before you are 35, you reduce the risks by 90%.

8. It usually takes several attempts to give up smoking

Many smokers don’t successfully give up the habit first time, so don’t give up on giving up, just because you failed once.

9. It’s not just your health that you regain when you quit

Nearly every no smoking campaign that there has been concentrated on the health risks of smoking and doesn’t even mention the many other benefits that you enjoy when you quit. Within just a week, you will feel more alert and you will be able to taste your food better and even smell the air!

10. There is no doubt that smoking kills, but that’s not all it does

Someone will always be able to quote a statistic that shows that people die of other causes more than they do about smoking, but that does not detract from the fact smoking does kill. It is estimated that smoking will take over 10 years off the life of an average person. Whatsoever, for every person that dies of a smoking related illness, 20 more people have their quality of life seriously impaired by a smoking related disease.
