Perfumes and fragrances have been used for centuries by both men and women and most of us would think nothing of spritzing on a bit of scent before we go out for the night. Some perfumes, as we all know are more expensive than others and, generally, you can definitely tell the difference between a cheap scent and a more expensive one. How would you feel, though, if your scent had cost you $12,721.89 an ounce, because that’s what one of the world’s most exclusive perfumes would have cost you back in 2011. Here’s a list of ten of the most exclusive perfumes in the world that have eye watering prices.

1. Baccarat’s Les Larmes Sacrees de Thebes

This perfume, which was designed by Christine Nagel, has a heady aroma of frankincense, myrrh, geranium, jasmine, and amber, amongst other things. The name translates as “Sacred Tears of Thebes,” and its price was a heady $6,800 an ounce. As with all of these exclusive perfumes, it’s not just the scent that you get for your money, but you also get an exquisite perfume bottle as well. In this case, the bottle was handmade by Baccarat artists.

2. Clive Christian’s No. 1

There was no expense spared in the bottle that contained Clive Christian No.1 either. The scent which had a price tag of $2,150 per ounce came in a crystal bottle that had diamonds set into its neck. The men’s version of the same fragrance was also one of the world’s most expensive perfumes for men.

3. Chanel’s N°5 Parfum Grand Extrait

When coco Chanel first designed her perfume, she wanted to come up with a scent that no one else would be able to copy so, with the help of perfume designer Ernest Beaux, she used some of the most expensive ingredients she could find at the time to create Chanel’s N°5. Chanel’s N°5 Parfum Grand Extrait, which costs $4,200 for a 30 ounce bottle, is the most exclusive and pure version of the iconic scent that you can buy.

4. Jean Patou’s Joy Baccarat Pure Limited

There are only fifty bottles of Jean Patou’s Joy Baccarat Pure perfume produced every year, so you are assured of exclusivity if you can get your hands on one. The perfume costs $1,800 per ounce and, in every ounce, there is said to be the scent of 1,000 jasmine flowers and 336 roses.

5. Hermes’ 24 Faubourg Extrait

Hermes’ 24 Faubourg Extrait was designed by Maurice Roucel and Bernard Bourjois and it is named after the address of the company’s flagship store in Paris. There were only 1,000 bottles sold of the limited edition of the perfume, which had a price of $1,500 per ounce, and it came in very exclusive St. Louis crystal bottles. There is a slightly more affordable version, which is still available today.

6. Caron’s Poivre

Caron’s Poivre was created in 1954 by Michel Morsetti, and it is said to have a dangerous, fiery scent. It came in a Baccarat bottle with a crystal and white gold collar and it demanded a price of $1,000 per ounce.

7. Clive Christian’s Imperial Majesty

This luxury perfume was created by perfumer Roja Dove and it was made from orris root, rose oil, Italian cinnamon and jasmine.  The price of Clive Christian’s Imperial Majesty works out at just under $13,000 an ounce and, the bottle that it comes in, which is made of 18 carat gold inset with a diamond, is so tricky to make that one in three of the bottles break during the manufacturing process.

8. JAR Bolt of Lightning

JAR Bolt of lightning was designed by Joel A. Rosenthal, which is where the “JAR” comes from, and the scent is said, in the advertising, to be reminiscent of the smell in the air, just after a bolt of lightning has struck. The $765 per ounce fragrances is an oriental, floral scent and it as undertones of ripe apples and oranges.

9. Annick Goutal’s  Eau d’Hadrien

The price of Annick Goutal’s Eau d’Hadrienis is relatively modest in our collection of exclusive perfumes, at just under $450 per ounce, and this fragrance is designed to be used by both and women. It is sad to have been inspired by Annick Goutal’s love of Italy and by the Tuscany landscape. The scent is described as being of Mediterranean sun ripened citrus fruits and cypress wood.

10. DKNY Golden Delicious Million Dollar Fragrance Bottle

In 2011, DKNY unveiled their one million dollar bottle of perfume. The bottle was made of white and yellow gold it was encrusted with nearly three thousand precious stones. The perfume inside the jewel encrusted bottle was DKNY Golden Delicious, which you can buy online for about $50. That is, if you don’t mend the cheap bottle that it comes in.
