10 Cool Google Tricks And Tips That Will Change The Way You Use The Internet
Google is no longer just the King of search engines. In 2016, it’s the undoubted King of the Internet – as well as much, much more, including autonomous cars. Everyone around the world uses it every day, from kids to students, young adults to the elderly, hipsters to professionals – and even your favourite celebrities.
We rely on Google to help us carry out research, find out the latest sports scores, share documents and files, organise your calendar – and so much more.
But have you ever stopped to wonder whether you’re really getting enough out of Google? Isn’t it possible that you could be getting even more out of it? Yus! Google is riddled with loads of hidden doorways that will bend your mind once you discover them. Without further ado, here are 10 Google tricks and tips that will change the way you use the Internet.
Google Can Be Used As A Timer
In 2016, lots of us are trying to find ways of becoming more productive. One of the best inventions for this in recent times are productivity apps. These apps allow you to up your game by offering cool features – such as timers that help you see how much you can get done in a certain period of time.
But did you know that Google actually comes with its own timer? Instead of downloading an app and working your way through its complex interface, you can instead just type “set time for 60 minutes” into Google and your timer will be set! Then all you need to do is start working and see how much you can get done.
Find Out When A Holiday Is
Not sure when Easter falls this year? Wondering when Valentine’s Day is and terrified that OMG I’ve Just Missed It No Wonder He Was Crying Like A Baby Yesterday!!??
Well, with Google you can find the date that any holiday falls on.
Simply tap in your holiday into Google (such as Christmas Day in case you’ve truly lost your marbles) and see what comes up.
This way, you never miss a holiday ever again.
Unfortunately, no, you can’t type in your mom’s name and expect her birthday to come up. She’s not famous enough.
Unless you’re Angelina Jolie. In which case, Hi Angelina!
You Can Find Things Using Incomplete Phrases
Ever got a lyric in your head but don’t know the whole words? Worse still, you don’t even know the name of the song? But you LOVE the song? Perhaps you’ve got something like “woke up this morning and myself beer.”
Sounds weird, huh? You really, REALLY want to know what line the song is from but you don’t know the song – or any of the other lyrics.
You could spend the rest of your life depressed, or you could type in the incomplete phrase into Google and hope for the best.
OR, you could use an asterisk to fill in the missing words.
For example, if you type in “woke up this morning and ** myself * beer” Google automatically realises that you’ve got three missing words. As such, there is a far better chance that it will return the result you want.
Find Out When A Movie Is Coming Out
There seems to be a hot movie coming out all the time at the moment. If it’s not Star Wars it’s Batman vs Superman. And if it’s not that, it’s the latest Will Smith movie (or is it just me that thinks Will Smith is still relevant?).
If you really want to find out when a new movie is coming out but the stupid websites are too interested in being all dark and scary instead of just GIVING ME THE RELEASE DATE, you can simply type into Google a keyword such as “star wars release date” and the search engine will hook you up.
Check On A Flight
Are your loved ones flying in today? Perhaps your partner has just taken off on a business trip and you can’t calm down until they land safely.
Rather than biting your nails for hours on end until they text or call, you can type a flight number into Google and it will tell you its status. Awesome.
You Can Even Find Out The FULL Schedule For Your Fav TV Shows
I’ve gotta admit that I LOVE television. I cried when Frasier ended, and almost died when Friends finally finished. Yes, I’m one of those people.
But what gets on my wick more than anything else is that it’s just so hard to find out the FULL schedule of my favourite TV shows.
Sure, TV Guide will list what’s on this week – but I want to know well into advance what I can expect.
If you’re like me and want to get the low-down on your TV schedule so that you can properly plan your life for the next few months without having a meltdown, you can simply tap in something like “big bang theory episodes” and Google will be at your service.
Hunt Down Related Sites
If Google returned results on a topic from a particularly awesome website, you might also want it to return more results from a similar site. If so, all you need to do is tap in related:<websitename> and voila! You’re all sorted. This neat trick allows you to separate the wheat from the chaff.
Quickly Convert Dollars To Any Currency
Many more of us work online in 2016, and we mostly all get paid in dollars. If you’re new to the online game and want to know how much you’ve just been paid, you can type in “dollar to pounds (or whatever your currency is)” into Google and a neat currency converter will be displayed. Bingo!
You’re either going to think “wow! this is more than I thought!” or “Damn! I need a new job!”
You Can Use Google To Discover New Songs
They say that nothing comes close to Spotify when it comes to discovering new bands bands and artists in 2016 – but they’re just plain wrong.
Instead of downloading Spotify and working your way through its not-very-user-friendly interface just to discover some new songs, you can instead think of a band you know a few hits by, type their name followed by “songs” into Google (for example, songs by Justin Timberlake) and Google will list loads and loads of their songs.
Then all you need to do is open a new tab and load up each song consecutively in YouTube. You might discover a hidden gem.
Find Out The Time
You’d think that in 2016 we wouldn’t need to rely on a search engine for the time. Not when we’ve got cell phones, the television and OUR OWN COMPUTER. Right?
But think of the amount of times your phone is not close to hand and your computer’s time has suddenly gone out of whack. Hey, it happens! If so, simply type in “what time is it” into Google and your life will be saved.
Until you realise you’re late for a job interview.
