How to make the right decision in any situation?

Some decisions are relatively easy to make, like deciding on what to eat, or what to watch on the TV, because the ramifications of making a wrong decision are so insignificant, but, from time to time, we are all faced with decisions that could be life changing, and they are the ones that we really need to pay attention to. Those types of decisions do not come along every day but, when they do, it is best to be prepared for them, so here are ten great tips on how to make the right decision in any situation that you could be faced with.

1. Stay calm

Whatever kind of choice you are facing, it’s important to stay calm and get yourself in the right mind-set. The best decision makers are the people who keep a cool head and think things through. What you don’t want to do is to make a knee-jerk, instant decision, about something that is very important.

 2. Get your facts straight

Another good tip on how to make the right decision is to find out as much as you possibly can about the choices you have in front of you, before you even start to try to make a decision. Think about what the outcomes for each of your choices could possibly be and what the probability of each of those outcomes happening is. Make a list of all the facts that you can find and that will help you weigh up your choices later.

3. Try to be objective

Most of us, when faced with a decision, already have a favourite option in mind and that will greatly influence how you go about justifying the choice you eventually make. If you have been offered a new job, for example, then you might already be leaning in favour of accepting that job, because it would mean you could live by the sea. Try to take a step back and look at the options more logically and, in this case, look at the cost of living if you were to move to a town by the sea, look at the future prospects of the job, and think about the travelling you would have to do to see friends and family.

4. Take your time, but set a deadline

Next tip on how to make the right decision is to take your time. An important decision shouldn’t be rushed, but it does have to be made. The best thing to do when faced with a difficult decision is set yourself a deadline by which that decision must be made. You don’t want to make a snap decision, without considering all the options, but nor do you want to procrastinate. Set yourself a reasonable timescale and that will stop you falling into either trap.

5. Get other people’s opinions

One of great tips on how to make the right decision is to ask friends and family and other people who you trust what they would do, faced with the same choices that you have. Whilst you shouldn’t base your decision solely on advice from someone else, a third party, objective opinion might help you see things from a different angle. It might also highlight things that you hadn’t considered.

6. Weigh up all the pros and cons

Another good tip on how to make the right decision is to make a list of all the benefits and the disadvantages of each of the choices you have before you. Try to be as logical as you can about this and be equally critical about all your choices. Take your time over your list too. Make up your first list, leave it for a day or two, and then go back and look again. You will be surprised at what might pop into your head when you are not even thinking about the decision that you have to make.

7. Watch out for decision fatigue

Studies have proven that, if you make too many decisions in one day, your decision making ability becomes less and less effective, which is known as decision fatigue. If you have a big personal decision to make, it will be better, therefore, if you make that decision at the weekend, when you are relaxed and you are not tired from making too many other decisions.

8. Trust your gut instinct

One of the most important tips on how to make the right decision is to trust your gut instinct. You can analyse a decision forever, but you don’t have a crystal ball, so you will never be 100% sure of the outcome. Once you have weighed up all the pros and cons and looked at all the obvious things, it will be your instinct, or your intuition, that will ultimately guide you. When you do get that gut feeling, trust it, because your mind is probably being more logical than you think it is. 9. Sleep on it

When you think you have made up your mind, give it one more day before you jump in. A day and a night will give you the chance to let your decision sink in and your subconscious will do the final mulling over of the facts for you. If you wake up the next morning and your mind is still made up, then you will know that have reached your decision.

10. Make your decision and then stick to it

With your mind made up, you can now put things into motion, whether that be handing in your notice at work, or showing your boyfriend the front door! Once you have made a decision, follow it though and don’t change your mind. If you start to second guess yourself and you hesitate, you may end up back to square one with no decision having been made at all.
