What is apple cider vinegar good for? 16 Health benefits of apple cider vinegar

What are the health benefits of apple cider vinegar? People have understood the health benefits of apple cider vinegar for centuries. In fact, as far back as 400 BC, the father of medicine himself, Hippocrates, used cider vinegar to treat his patients. Some of the health benefits of apple cider do come from folklore, but behind the myth, there is scientific evidence that backs up some of the claims made for this acidic liquid, so here are 16 of the health benefits that are to be gained from apple cider vinegar:

1. It can cure dandruff

The white flakes of dandruff are often caused by a certain fungus, called Malassezia furfur, and this fungus can be completely removed by the antifungal properties of cider vinegar, and the acidity of apple cider vinegar makes it difficult for the yeast that causes dandruff to grow. Apply a solution of half water, half apple cider to your scalp and leave for about 30 minutes to 1 hour, then rinse away and wash your hair, as you normally would; repeat the next time you wash your hair, until the dandruff has cleared.

2. It is an antioxidant

Apple cider vinegar can counter the effect of free radicals due to its beta-carotene content. Antioxidants, like beta-carotene have been proven to boost the immune system and ward of the signs of aging.

3. Aids weight loss

Apple cider vinegar benefits also include weight loss aid. Studies have shown that apple cider vinegar reduces hunger and boosts the metabolism and can, therefore, be an aid to slimming. Some people found it effective to take 2 teaspoons of the vinegar, mixed with some water, before meals and it also helped them to eat less, as well as to detoxify the liver. (Consult your doctor before trying any self treatments.)

4. Soothes sunburn and other inflammation

Apple cider vinegar is an anti-inflammatory and it can be used topically to treat the inflammation caused by sunburn or taken orally to help treat internal inflammation in the intestines. If drinking the vinegar diluted with water doesn’t really appeal to you, it makes a great salad dressing instead.

5. Eases stomach complaints

What is apple cider vinegar good for? If you are suffering from diarrhea, then a bacterial infection might be to blame. Mix two teaspoons of apple cider vinegar with a cup of water or a clear fruit juice, such as apple, cranberry or grape juice, and the vinegar’s antibacterial properties will quickly kill off the bugs that are the cause of your problem.

6. Soothes a sore throat

Another one of health benefits of apple cider vinegar is that it can help sooth a sore throat. Everyone has their favorite natural sore throat remedy and apple cider vinegar is just one of them. The next time that you feel a sore throat coming on, try a tablespoon of the vinegar with some warm water and honey. Apple cider vinegar has both antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties to fight the infection and pain and the honey will gently soothe your throat.

7. Provides relief from bites, stings and burns

If you’ve been out for a day in the country and come home with a collection of bites, stings and rashes, then try a nice hot bath with 5 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar added to it. It will soothe away the inflammation, stop the itching and it’s also good for easing aching in the joints too.

8. Cures the hiccups

Apple cider vinegar benefits also include hiccups aid. This one may be more folklore than scientific fact, but it beats trying to drink a glass of water upside down or retaining your breath for a minute or two. The next time you get the hiccups that won’t go away, try a teaspoon or a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar, straight down, and see if it works.

9. Reduces blood sugar levels

Studies have shown that apple cider vinegar can have a positive effect for those who suffer from type-2 diabetes. In one scientific study, patients who were given two tablespoons of the vinegar, before they went to bed, were found to have a reduced level of glucose in their blood.

10. Prevents indigestion

Benefits of apple cider vinegar are numerous and here is another one – it helps prevent indigestion. If you are one of the many people who love rich and spicy food, but hate the indigestion that comes after, then try a glass of warm water with a teaspoon of apple cider (you can also add a teaspoon of honey for better taste); drink it about a half an hour before you eat, and it should help to prevent the discomfort later.

11. It removes warts

You can use apple cider vinegar as an effective wart removal agent. Simply soak some cotton wool in the vinegar and fasten it over the wart with some sticking plaster overnight. You may find that the treatment makes the skin around the wart swell, but the solution will remove the wart.

12. Benefits of apple cider vinegar for hair: make your hair shiny and silky

Try to rinse your hair with a solution of water mixed with apple cider vinegar as a final step of your shower routine, there should be about 8 parts of water and 1 part of vinegar. After you’ve shampooed and conditioned your hair, apply the vinegar mix to your hair, let it sit for a couple of minutes, then rinse with water. This vinegar mix will add luster and shine to your locks and restore the PH level to your hair. Avoid getting the solution into your eyes, as it will sting. Some people like to apply the water-vinagar solution to their hair first, let it sit for a couple of minutes and then rinse, shampoo, condition and proceed with their usual routine. Play with it and try to find the routine that you like best, but if you do it regularly, you will see that it will dramatically increase the shine in your hair.

13. Apple cider vinegar for skin

Another one of health benefits of apple cider vinegar is that it makes a great face toner that helps to control acne. Apple cider vinegar has strong anti-bacterial properties, which makes it a really effective treatment for acne. It also contains natural acids, organic compounds, which will exfoliate your skin, reduce redness and rebalance the pH of your skin, which makes it a great face toner. If you have any skin issues or complicated skin problems, we strongly recommend you to consult your doctor and avoid doing any self treatments.

14. It is good for the lymphatic system

Research has shown that apple cider vinegar can be used to help reduce allergies. The vinegar helps to break up mucus and clean the lymph nodes and help you to avoid developing sinus infections and the related symptoms, like a sore throat and headaches.

15. It removes stains from teeth

Rub some apple cider vinegar on your teeth and it will remove any stains and if you rinse your mouth with a solution of vinegar and water, it can help kill plaque and the bacteria that cause bad breath. (Avoid doing it if you have sensitive teeth though; also, don’t do it on a regular basis).

16. Balances the PH of your body

Higher acid levels in your body can lead to a lack of energy and a greater susceptibility to infection. Sipping a little apple cider vinegar mixed with water (1 teaspoon in a glass of water) a few times during the day will help to regulate the acidity in your body and maintain a healthy alkaline body PH balance.

Note: Taking only small amount of apple cider vinegar is absolutely safe, but taking larger amounts of it regularly can cause certain problems, therefore, as with all medications and supplements, consult your doctor before starting to include new products into your regimen.

And here is another bonus tip on how your pet can benefit from apple cider vinegar: mix one cup of apple cider vinegar with one cup of water and spray liberally on your pet’s fur daily for around a week and it will kill off any fleas. Yes, there will be a smell, but what is better the smell or the fleas?

More and more people are turning to their kitchen cupboards for heath treatments, rather than going to the drugstore and here is another ‘food with benefits’ that has a many uses in the medicine cabinet, as it does in the kitchen – apple cider vinegar. The best kind of apple cider vinegar for health benefits is the organic, unpasteurized kind. Of course, this list of health benefits of apple cider vinegar is far from complete.
