Top 10 antioxidant-rich foods that you need to include in your diet

You know that antioxidants are good for you, they are the things that help your body fight the free radicals that can damage the DNA in your cells, help you fight off the signs of aging and can help prevent cancer too. You’ve probably heard too that some foods have higher antioxidant content than others, but which foods, exactly, are the best? To make things a bit easier, we’ve listed for you here ten of the top antioxidant-rich foods that really should be included in your diet:

1. Blueberries

Blueberries are a fantastic source of antioxidants and are well known as being extremely useful in protecting the health of your heart.  They also help to balance the blood sugar levels in your body and are often used as a healthy food to help treat diabetes.

2. Strawberries

A university study named strawberries as one of the best natural sources of antioxidants. Eating strawberries can help with the health of your eyes, and maintain clear complexion. They also help to reduce the levels of bad cholesterol in your blood.

3. Prunes

Prunes are not everyone’s favorite, but they are a good source of vitamins and fiber, as well as being packed full of antioxidants. Just a quarter cup of prunes will provide you with over 30% of the vitamin K that you need and more than 10% of the fiber.

4. Green tea

It’s not all about eating fruit and veg to get your antioxidants, green tea is a great source too. Green tea contains a unique type of antioxidant called EGCG or epigallocatchin-gallate, which is especially effective in fighting free radical damage and slowing the signs of aging.

You might not have expected to see beans on this list, but pinto beans are actually a very good source of antioxidants. They are also a wonderful source of dietary fiber, so they are good for the digestion too.

8. Walnuts

Walnuts can deliver a powerful dose of cancer-fighting antioxidants and the cancer fighting compound, natural phenol antioxidant – ellagic acid. They are also known to be useful in fighting type 2 diabetes and they are also good for your heart.

9. Cranberries

Cranberries are an immune system boosting, superfood, that are one of the highest natural sources of the antioxidant phenols. They are also well known for their ability to fight urinary infections.

10. Grapes

The darker grapes, in particular, are loaded with phytochemicals, antioxidants that can provide protection against heart disease and cancer. They also contain vitamin C and selenium.
