10 Reasons To Drink Almond Milk

If you’re on the look-out for a dairy-free milk substitute, almond milk is a fab alternative.

I started drinking almond milk a few months back after it was recommended to me by a nutritionist friend. I had become increasingly sensitive to milk and needed something different because I still wanted the calcium.

And I loved milk. The idea of giving it up altogether just wasn’t on my agenda!

My nutritionist friend got me onto almond milk, and although I was sceptical at first, I haven’t looked back since. It’s tasty, and it works as a solid alternative to regular milk for anyone who is either vegan, doesn’t like the taste of regular milk, or who has become sensitive to it (like me).

Almond milk is a solid replacement for milk, but it’s worth mentioning that it doesn’t contain quite as much protein or calcium as the regular stuff. With that said, here are 10 very good reasons to start drinking almond milk.

Almond Milk Can Help You Lose Weight

It might not contain as much protein or calcium as regular milk, but the good thing is that it doesn’t contain as many calories either.

A single cup of whole milk can contain up to a whopping 146 calories, while a cup of almond milk contains as few as 60. The benefits here are obvious: Replacing whole milk with almond milk can help you to shift a few pounds if that’s a priority of yours right now.

(as long as you don’t start drinking double the amount of almond milk because you like the taste!)

Almond Milk Looks After Your Heart

Milk, for all its goodness, is one of those luxuries we enjoy that too much of could actually be bad for us. For all its protein and calcium, it’s also rich in calories, bad fats, and cholesterol.

Not so almond milk. In fact, there are zero calories, saturated fat and cholesterol in this type of milk.

Another one of amazing health benefits of almond milk is that it’s also got very little sodium content, but it is high in healthy fats. This means that it’s healthy for your heart and can prevent heart disease an high blood pressure.

It’s Vegan Friendly

Turning vegan is a big life choice, and a much bigger life choice than some people realise. It’s okay to turn vegan for ethical reasons and to stick to your guns when everyone is telling you “Go on! Have a piece of meat! You know you want to!”

Osteoporosis is not something many of us think about when we’re young. But thinning bones is becoming increasingly common, largely thanks to a poor diet and lifestyle. Osteoporosis can occur as a result of too little calcium in your system, and it can result in very painful bones that prevent you from being at your best.

As mentioned, almond milk doesn’t contain as much calcium as regular milk, but it contains enough to ward off osteoporosis. As well as giving you up to 30% of the daily recommended amount of calcium, almond milk also contributes around a quarter of the daily recommended amount of vitamin D, too. This lowers your risk of both arthritis and osteoporosis, and also gives your immune system a boost.

It’s Loaded With Antioxidants

Antioxidants are your body’s first line of defence against rogue molecules called free radicals. These pesky little dudes have only one mission – to cause as much mayhem in your body as possible.

And if you let them, they will do just that. Conditions they can cause include skin complaints, migraines – and even cancer.

One of the annoying symptoms that can sometimes come with drinking milk is boating. URGH.

A lot of people are sceptical before they first try almond milk. I certainly was. My biggest scepticism had nothing to do with its health benefits. It was all to do with how it would taste.
