14 Healthy ways to satisfy your sweet tooth (healthy eating tips)

Just when you’ve been good all week long, some inconsiderate, unthinking, downright mean television producer puts up an ad on your TV for your favorite candy bar. So what do you do? Is it: A. You raid your secret stash in the kitchen cupboard? B. You suddenly remember something else that you need from your local convenience store? Or is it C: You reach for one of our ten healthy eating tips and alternatives that will satisfy your sweet tooth?

1. Eat sweet fruits to satisfy your sweet tooth

Pretty much any fruit is far better for you than a candy, so keep a well-stocked fruit bowl in your home, so that you can reach for a healthy, sweet and guilt free snack at any time of the day.

2. Honey

Eating honey is one of my favorite healthy ways to satisfy my sweet tooth. When I crave something sweet, I eat a teaspoon or two of honey and my sweet craving evaporates right away.

3. Smoothies

Another healthy way to satisfy your sweet tooth and enjoy all the benefits of fruit is to make your own smoothies. There is a big variety of healthy smoothie recipes online (just Google it), mix and match different fruits and you can have a different combo every time. Add a ripe banana to your healthy smoothie and it will be sweet with no added sugar!

4. Popsicles

Popsicles can also help you satisfy your sweet tooth. You can buy sugar free or fruit juice popsicles at your local store or try making your own by freezing some of that smoothie.

5. Yoghurt

Plain or low fat sugar-free yoghurts taste really good and can also easily satisfy your sweet tooth; you can keep them in the fridge ready for when you need them, or take them to work for a snack when you’re out. If you want it flavored mash some berries with a teaspoon of honey in a bowl (my favorites are blueberries and raspberries, and you will need only a small amount) and add these to your yoghurt. You’ll enjoy a delicious and healthy dessert which is far more beneficial for your health, than a yogurt with added sugars, artificial flavors and colors.

6. Treat yourself and cover your fruit in some chocolate

You don’t need to be sugar free to have a healthy diet, it’s just making sure that you moderate your sugar consumption. One way of enjoying the taste of chocolate without eating a whole bar is to melt the chocolate (I mean good quality dark chocolate) and dip some fruit in it (strawberries, bananas, pineapple, raspberries or apples). You get just a thin layer of chocolate along with all the goodness of the fruit, it’s another great way to satisfy your sweet tooth!

7. Bake your own cookies

If you make your own cookies or muffins, you know exactly what’s in them. Store bought goods often contain far more sugar than they need, but when you make your own, you decide on the ingredients, so that you can satisfy your sweet tooth without feeling guilty.

8. Flavored instant oatmeal

Oatmeal is not just for breakfast. You can get a huge range of sugar-free, instant oatmeal snacks and all you have to do is add hot water. It’s filling, satisfying and healthy. You can also add some nuts, dried fruits and honey, if you want it really sweet.

9. Sugar free candy

Visit any health shop and you will find a good range of sugar free candy and chocolate. It’s designed for diabetics, but they taste just like the real thing.

10. Microwave popcorn

Add a few chocolate chips to some microwave popcorn for a great whole grain snack and a cheeky little chocolate fix at the same time. There is only about 50 or 70 calories in a cup of unbuttered popcorn that is popped in oil, it will help you satisfy your sweet tooth without storing calories in your love handles.

11. Dates

Dates are my favorites when it comes to satisfying my sweet tooth! When I crave for something sweet – I reach for dates!

12. Bake an apple or a pear

Baked apples or pears are wonderful and healthy alternatives to sugar-rich treats and candies. It’s easy to make, it takes only about 10-15 minutes and it tastes delicious. Add some honey on top for some extra sweetness. Yum, yum!

13. Trail mix

Trail mix is another healthy way to satisfy your sweet tooth for those times when your need an energy boost and when you are one the go. Make your own trail mix or buy an already made one, it’s easy, healthy and yummy!

14. Frozen fruits

Have you ever tried frozen fruits, they taste amazing, just like an ice-cream but with less calories. There are many fruits that you can freeze: strawberries, grapes, melon slices…pop a couple in your mouth and enjoy a delicious treat to satisfy your sweet tooth!
