10 Unhealthy foods/drinks to avoid that are bad for your skin
You are what you eat and there is nowhere where this is more noticeable, than your own skin. Research has shown that eating the right foods can positively improve your skin. Eating foods which are high in protein, along with fish and fresh vegetables are all good for the skin, but just as important, eating too much of the wrong types of foods can have a negative impact on your skin.
If you think that you may be particularly sensitive to certain types of foods, then you can visit a dermatologist for tests to determine exactly what you should avoid, but here are ten unhealthy foods and drinks that are recognized to have an adverse effect on everyone’s skin. Let’s begin:
We all know the dangers of excessive alcohol intake but, even a fairly moderate intake of alcohol can have a negative effect on your skin. Alcohol is what’s known as a diuretic, which means that it causes dehydration in the body. This dehydration will also cause dryness in the skin and ultimately lead to premature aging.
The dangers of too much salt are well publicized when it comes to your heart, but did you know that it can be the cause of puffy eyes and even facial bloating too? So, make sure to limit your salt intake.
More than two cups of a caffeinated drink, such as coffee or black tea, stimulates the release of the stress hormone known as cortisol, which can be responsible for a dull appearance of your skin, acceleration of the aging process and the thinning of your skin as well.
4. Fried Food
French fries and similar deep fried food contain transfats that pile on the pounds, but also slow the blood circulation. Reduced blood circulation can cause the pores in your skin to become clogged and bacteria on the skin to build up, leading the formation of acne. Be aware.
We know it’s fattening but too much sugar can weaken our immune system too and makes us more susceptible to bacteria which can cause acne breakouts on the skin. It can also affect our digestion which in turn can adversely affect our skin.
The excessive consumption of dairy foods has been linked to the appearance of acne and, rather unpleasantly, dairy products are also known to form mucus in the body which can contribute to inflammation and attracts bacteria. In addition to this, dairy foods can also cause an increase sebum, the substance that can cause pore clogging in some people.
Excessive consumption of foods high in iodine, such as crab, lobster and shrimp can also lead to breakouts of acne. In this case, it’s an instant response of the body, but if eaten regularly over a period of time, the iodine builds up in the body and doesn’t cause a reaction.
8. White Bread and Pasta
Sticking to whole grain products is best all round, as high glycemic foods, such as white bread, pasta and cakes have been linked to acne, whereas whole grain products are an all-round healthier option and packed full of antioxidants too.
9. Empty Foods
It’s not really a surprise to find that foods such as candy, French fries and over-processed pre-prepared meals, which lack essential nutritional ingredients, aggravate skin problems. Most of these also contain high levels of salt or sugar, and if they ever had any nutritional value, it has been processed out of them.
10. Artificial Additives
Some artificial colorings, preservatives and flavorings found in many processed foods have no real nutritional value, but have also been proven, in some cases, to cause inflammation and histamine reactions. More worrying is that our bodies tend to store these chemicals in the tissues so that, over time, the problem only gets worst.
Reading this list you might be tempted to conclude that eating anything is bad for your skin but, as we all know, the secret to healthy, beautiful skin and a healthy body is to eat fresh, healthy foods and to follow good, balanced diet.
