10 Super green, plant-based smoothie recipes

Green smoothies sound great, in principle anyway. They can provide you with energy, improve your digestion and give you a whole host of important vitamins and minerals, but for many people, the whole idea of a green, veggie smoothie just doesn’t sound like anything that they would want to drink. Some green smoothies have, shall we say, an acquired taste, to say the least. Here are ten green smoothie recipes for the beginner that taste great, and are good for your health. 

1. Pear, basil and lemon smoothie

This smoothie recipe combines the fibre of pears with the flavour of lemon juice and fresh basil leaves, in a fabulous tasting smoothie that has anti-inflammatory properties and the ability to boost your immune system. It’s a surprising combination of flavours, but we think you’ll love it!


  • 8 ounces of sliced pear
  • ¼ cup of freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 1 cup fresh basil
  • The juice from 4 celery stalks

2. Kale and peach shake

Peaches are a great natural way to add sweetness to a green smoothie, without having to resort to using sugar, or other sweeteners, and they add some of that wonderful peachy flavour to the mix as well. This recipe has kale in it too, which has more health benefits than we could possibly list here!


  • 1 of cup frozen pineapple
  • ½ cup of frozen strawberries
  • 1 cup of frozen peaches
  • 10 kale leaves
  • 1 cup of water

3. Mango and coconut smoothie

This smoothie that has a tropical twist is both filling and refreshing, and it makes the ideal after workout snack to replace your lost energy. It works just as well as a breakfast smoothie to get you energised in the mornings and keep you going all the way to lunchtime.


  • 1 cup of fresh spinach
  • ½ cup of sliced banana
  • 1 cup of frozen mango
  • ½ cup of orange juice
  • ¾ cup of coconut milk
  • ½ cup of ice cubes

4. The perfect breakfast green smoothie

Smoothies don’t have to be cold, and this room temperature smoothie is the perfect way to start you off on a winter’s morning when ice is the very last thing you want in a drink. This has the satisfying bulk of oatmeal and flax seed, so it will fill you up keep you feeling satisfied all day long.


  • ½ cup of sliced banana
  • 2 handfuls of spinach
  • ¾ cup of coconut milk
  • ¼ cup of rolled oats
  • 1 tablespoon of flax seeds

5. Spicy tropical green smoothie

The ginger in this green smoothie gives it a real kick of flavour and plenty of detoxing power too. It’s another green smoothie that has the favour of the tropics, as well as all the vitamins and minerals of spinach. Even if you think you don’t like spinach, give this recipe a go, you might be very surprised!


  • 1 sliced banana
  • 1 cup of pineapple
  • 2 handfuls of spinach
  • 1 pieces of ginger (to taste)
  • 1 cup of water

6. Green and creamy smoothie

The fantastic fruity flavours and the wonderfully creamy texture of this smoothie will make you think it is more like a luxury milkshake than a vegetable based green smoothie. It’s the avocado that gives this smoothie its creamy texture and it also makes it a filling and satisfying snack as well. 


  • 1 frozen banana
  • 1 de-seeded and peeled orange
  • 1 cup of spinach
  • 1 peeled and sliced avocado

7. Green tea and grape smoothie

Green tea has been drunk in China for its medicinal properties for centuries and it packs one of the most powerful antioxidant punches around. Add to the all the nutritional value of spinach and you have a real super-smoothie with this recipe. 


  • 1 cup of spinach
  • 1 and half cups of green grapes
  • A cup of green tea
  • 1 cup of frozen banana

8. Nutty banana and berry green smoothie

This is a great green smoothie for the kids, because it tastes more of the fruit than it does of the vegetables. It also has nuts in it for added fibre and omega-3 fatty acids too. The choice of nuts you add is up to you, but raw walnuts go great with this green smoothie recipe.


  • 2 cups of spinach

  • ¾ of a cup of mixed berries

9. Fruity kale green smoothie
