10 Negative calorie foods you need to include in your diet if you want to lose weight

Let’s dispel the myth before we start here; there is no such thing as a negative calorie. What there are though are foods that you can eat where your body uses as many as, or more, calories to digest the food, than the food contains itself. Such foods can be very useful to include in your diet, when you are trying to lose weight but, nutritionists warn that you should not attempt to live on a diet consisting solely of these foods, or you will miss out on some very important nutrients that you get from other foods. What is great about these foods, though, is that you can eat as much as you like without putting any weight on, so here are our top ten ‘negative’ calorie foods that you need to include in your diet if you want to lose weight:

1. Celery

Celery is probably the best known of the negative calorie foods that you can eat with no net gain in calories. A single average serving of celery contains less than 20 calories, and you will burn more than that in preparing, chewing and digesting it.

2. Broccoli

Nutrient rich broccoli is a good vegetable to eat at all times, but it is especially good, when you are counting the calories. Broccoli contains vitamin C, vitamin A, calcium and folic acid, and it is high in soluble and insoluble fiber too. One cup of broccoli contains only about 30 calories and, the net effect after digesting it is a big, not so fat, zero.

3. Lettuce

Lettuce is another one of the popular negative calorie foods that can be helpful when you are trying to lose weight. Even though a lettuce salad is an ideal way to fill yourself up a bit before you eat your main meal, you will get virtually no calories from eating it. The main content of lettuce is water and a full cup of lettuce contains only 8 calories; lettuce contains potassium, calcium, iron, vitamin A and C. Eat a salad before your main course and you will eat less of the high calorie food.

4. Lemons and oranges

Citrus fruits are a great way to enjoy a no calorie snack. Eat an orange and you will get all the benefits of the antioxidants and vitamins that they contain for virtually no calories at all. They are also a great boost to the immune system and will help to fend off coughs, colds and other similar unpleasant ailments.

5. Watermelon

Even though it has a deliciously sweet flavor, a serving of watermelon contains just 30 calories. Watermelon has been shown to boost the metabolism, it contains antioxidants, potassium, iron, magnesium, vitamins A and C, and its high water content will help to keep you hydrated as well.

6. Cucumber

One of the popular negative calorie foods is cucumber. Cucumber makes a great adornment to a salad and you can pretty much eat as much of it, as you can manage. Like lettuce, cucumber is high in water content and the average number of calories per 100 grams is only 16.

7. Cauliflower

The cruciferous vegetable, cauliflower, has many health benefits, as well as very low calorie content. It has been proven to contain anti-inflammatory ingredients and it helps improve the digestive and cardiovascular systems. Despite all this goodness, it still makes a great addition to the calorie controlled diet menu; at just 25 calories per 100 gram serving, cauliflower is another wonderful example of negative calorie foods.

8. Mushrooms

Mushrooms come in all shapes and sizes and can be eaten raw or cooked, but all of the various types of mushroom are low in calories. Mushrooms are rich in vitamin D, iron, potassium and magnesium. Be careful how you cook them though, smothering them in cheese and butter isn’t going to work, but on their own, a 100 gram serving of mushrooms contains less, than 40 calories.

9. Cabbage

Cabbage is recommended as a vegetable to eat when you are on a diet, because, although it might fill you up at the time of eating it, you will soon burn off the calories that it does contain. Cabbage is filled with nutrients and vitamins, and a typical 100 gram serving only contains 25 calories.

10. Apples

Apples are also included in our list of negative calorie foods. An apple a day keeps the doctor away and even better than that, one large apple only contains around 100 calories, but it will take 120 calories to digest it. Perhaps we should say an apple a day will keep the doctor, and the calories, away.
