10 Foods You Should Never Eat
Without wanting to terrify you, there are basically foods that you should never eat.
Now, ruling out ten foods forever can be tricky, especially if you’re a massive foodie like I am. When I was a child growing up, I always wanted to eat the “bad stuff”. My mom tried getting me onto leafy greens at an early age, but I just wanted candies, burgers and soda pops.
I wanted to eat everything.
My fascination with all things bad carried on into my teen years, and even into my early twenties. But there came a point when I realised that I simply couldn’t go on like this; I had to make a change. I had to start eating healthier.
Eliminating foods from your diet doesn’t have to be seen as a chore. People argue that the good stuff tastes bland, but it doesn’t have to. And while the bad stuff might taste nice, it really isn’t doing you any good over the long-term (as well as the short-term). So if you’re looking to eat a better diet, let’s take a look at 10 foods you should never eat ever again.
Fruit juice sounds super healthy because it’s just fruit in a juice, right? Right?
Well, not exactly.
Many people are shocked when I tell them that fruit juice is actually damaging their health, and it takes a while to convince them I’m right. The first main problem with fruit juice is that it is all pasteurised, which means the nutritional value has been eroded. This pasteurisation process kills off the vitamins and minerals. Secondly, fruit juice is alarmingly high in sugar and offsets your blood glucose levels. Which is not cool.
Fruit juice sold at the store is generally bad for you; however, if you make your own fruit juice at home, you can definitely make a healthy one.
Bagels were a big “weakness” of mine when I first started working in city. I’d grab them on the way to the office in the morning, and munch away as I opened up my emails.
I put weakness in inverted commas because I didn’t know they were anything remotely bad at the time!
But bagels are not your skin’s best friend, largely due to their high glycemic index. This high index leads to increased insulin, which causes inflammation on your skin. In turn, this can lead to acne and even rosacea.
Soy protein has to be healthy, yeah? After all, aren’t soy and protein both good for you?
On their own, and left to their own natural devices, soy and protein are good for you. But soy protein is very deceptive and not healthy at all, this is why we also included it to our list of foods you should never eat.
The problem with soy is that virtually all of it grown in the U.S.A has been genetically modified – which is very bad. This means that it contains chemical pesticides, which are also very bad. So, what you have is unnatural soy. Unnatural soy that is also unfermented, which is very hard for us to digest properly. Therefore, it causes indigestion and flatulence.
Yes, I drank loads of soda when I was a kid, and there’s a good chance that you did too. But if you’re still drinking soda by the gallon despite now being married with your own kids, it’s time to stop.
Here are the facts: Women are recommended to consume no more than 6 teaspoons of sugar per day, yet one glass of soda contains way more than that. Moreover, doctors and dieticians may disagree on many things when it comes to our diets, but one thing they unanimously agree on is that soda is bad for us.
There is a wide misconception that microwave popcorn is somehow healthy for us. After all, it’s just corn, right?
Um, not really.
Organic popcorn may well be okay. But non-organic popcorn that has been microwaved is a big no-no. The biggest issue here is the fact that the popcorn is microwaved; after all, microwavable bags are laced with a chemical that has been known to cause cancer.
Moreover, companies coat their popcorn in a fake butter flavouring that has been linked to lung cancer.
It’s not cool is what I’m saying, despite popcorn’s associations with going to the movies.
The debate over whether butter is better for our health than margarine has been ongoing for years and years, and still no one has found a decisive answer. But what we can tell you is that margarine is definitely very bad for you.
At the heart of the margarine vs butter debate is fats and cholesterol, and although margarine contains zero cholesterol and plenty of good fats, it is created out of trans fat, which clogs arteries and leads to heart disease and diabetes.
If you eat deli meats, the chances are sky high that you’re eating dead animals that were not raised in a recommended ecological fashion. This means they were injected with unnatural growth hormones and were exposed to all kinds of diseases. Basically, they were raised poorly. And a poorly raised animal means poor meat, which has dire consequences on your overall health. Avoid.
Vegetable oils are also included in our list of foods you should never eat. People are under the impression that vegetable oil is the healthiest oil because it’s, well, veggie. But this is another misconception.
Most vegetable oils have been genetically modified and have been found to cause all kinds of health issues, such as cancer, diabetes, heart disease, digestive disorders, as well as liver problems.
It’s perfectly okay to sweeten your salad with some feta, or spread some goats cheese on your slice of wholemeal toast. But it’s not cool to eat processed cheeses that are basically fake food.
Processed cheeses are those that are sliced and wrapped in plastic. Sometimes they’re even squeezed into cans. Eew.
Lastly, I’m going to spoil everything by saying that diet soda is also included in our list of 10 foods you should never eat.
I know, I know. You thought diet soda was okay because it isn’t full-fat soda. It’s diet soda! Come on!
Unfortunately, I can’t give you this one. Although diet soda contains zero sugar, companies make up for this by introducing artificial sweeteners which are also empty calories that are terrible for your health.
Stay happy and healthy!
