10 Foods for clear skin

There are plenty of skin care treatments available on the market and new ones seem to appear every day. That’s no surprise, when you realise that it’s not just teenagers that get spots. Around twenty percent of women suffer with acne, right up until their mid-twenties to their early thirties, and that’s just one of the conditions that can affect your skin. What might surprise you to know, though, is that for many people, there is an alternative to all those creams and lotions that’s a lot more natural and a lot cheaper too. There is an increasing amount evidence to suggest that the best way to get clear skin is through what you eat, so here are ten foods that will help clear up your complexion.

1. Tomatoes

Tomatoes are a great source of nutrients that help to look after your skin. They are rich in Vitamin C, which boosts the production of collagen and so keeps the skin firm and young looking. Tomatoes also contain lycopene, which stimulates blood circulation in the skin.

2. Fatty fish

Fatty fish, like salmon and tuna, contain the all-important omega-3 fatty acids that are so good for your heart and your skin too. Omega-3 fatty acids help promote the production of collagen, which keeps skin elastic and firm, and they also help to reduce inflammation in the skin and do reduce blemishes and swelling.

3. Red grapes

Red grapes contain powerful antioxidants that have been proven to fight inflammation and skin conditions, such as eczema and psoriasis and they also fight off the effects of allergic reactions too. Antioxidants also fight the damaging effects of free radicals, which can be the cause of wrinkles and lines forming in the skin.

4. Wholegrain foods

The health of your skin and your blood sugar levels are closely linked, and processed carbohydrates, like white rice and white flour, are known to produce spikes in the blood sugar levels. The carbohydrates in wholegrain foods take longer to break down in the body, so you don’t get the spikes in blood sugar levels, and you get a sustained source of energy too.

5. Pomegranates

Pomegranates are also a part of our list of foods for clear skin. A few glasses of pomegranate juice a day could make all the difference to your complexion. Pomegranates are packed full of polyphenol antioxidants that fight the signs of ageing, keep the complexion clear and they will bring a healthy rosy glow to your skin too.

6. Green and yellow peppers

Yellow and green peppers seem to be a food with some particularly strong skin caring properties too. Women, who do eat a lot of yellow and green peppers, have fewer lines in their skin, especially around the eyes. This could be because the carotenoids that are found in peppers reduce the sensitivity of the skin to the sun.

7. Nuts

Nuts are one of the healthiest snack foods you could choose and it seems that they are great for clearing up acne too. Nuts provide a great source of selenium and zinc, deficiencies of which can be a cause of skin problems. They also boost the immune system too. Add to that, the Vitamin E that nuts contain, and you have a great combination of nutrients that can do wonders for your skin.

8. Watercress

Add some watercress to your salads and you could be doing your skin a big favour. Watercress contains manganese, potassium, beta-carotenes and it is packed full of antioxidants. This means that watercress will nourish the skin and it will also help to flush out excess fluids and toxins from the body too.

9. Oat milk

The debate as to whether or not dairy food can cause breakouts still rumbles on, with no clear answer, but there is no doubt that, if you are slightly lactose intolerant, and you didn’t know it, then dairy products could cause issues with the skin. The only way to be sure, is to cut out dairy for a while and try some alternatives. Oat milk makes a great high fibre, lactose free, alternative to cow’s milk. It is also rich in Vitamin E and folic acid, which will also help to clear up your skin.

10. Beetroot

Beetroot is a good, all round, skin care food that is well worth adding to your diet. The purple vegetable contains high amounts of Vitamins A and E, as well as sodium, calcium and potassium, all of which are essential nutrients for your skin. Beetroot is also well known as a body cleanser that helps to flush toxins out of the skin and body.
