10 Dietary Changes That Will Clear Your Acne
Acne is really horrible.
Like, life-draining horrible.
When I was younger, I got plagued by an acne breakout just a month before my high school prom. I was in tears.
I couldn’t look at myself in the mirror, refused to get up for school in the morning and wouldn’t leave the house even to go and visit my grandmother. I became a reclusive schoolgirl and my grades suffered horrendously.
Acne can do this to you: It can rock your self-esteem, ensuring that you feel worthless, small and desperately unattractive.
The thing is, though, that acne is a direct result of your lifestyle choices. It doesn’t just magically appear, but instead manifests itself after a few poor decisions on your part.
And just as easily as it comes, it can also easily go – as long as you make the right changes to your personal health.
You are what you eat, and if you eat the wrong foods, acne can break out.
Likewise, if you eat the right foods, acne can clear right up!
After suffering several more acne breakouts after high school, I finally fixed up my diet and now I’m completely clear of it. To sort your own issues out, here are 10 dietary changes that will help you out.
“Eat more carrots! You’ll be able to see in the dark!” my mom would enthuse when I was a young girl.
Although carrots can improve your vision, their real potency lies in their ability to clear up acne.
Rich in vitamin A, they double down on skin conditions, bringing out the real, beautiful you.
Drink Green Tea
Green tea is divine. I drink it all the time because of the fabulous health benefits it provides:
- It can improve your cognitive functioning
- It can reduce your risk of cancer
- It can help you to shed weight
- It can improve physical performance
Provided you’re still here and are not busy buying green tea online, let me also tell you that green tea can help with acne.
A study in South Korea found that the antioxidants in green tea can reduce acne.
You don’t even need to drink it (because, let’s face it, not everyone enjoys the taste of green tea); instead, to get the same health benefits out of it, you can apply a cold bag onto areas of your face that are affected by acne.
Few foods are better at clearing acne right up than salmon.
Whether you eat it fried, smoked or raw, salmon stabilises your hormones, boosts your mood – and cleans up your face in the process.
This is because acne is often created by our state of mind. If your hormones are out of balance, there is a greater chance that you’re stressed – and stress is when acne thrives.
Now, here is an unusual one! I first hear about oysters when I saw the Disney film Alice In Wonderland. You remember it: Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum recite a poem about two predatory character, a walrus and a carpenter, who eat the poor little oysters.
I thought it was horrible!
But as I’ve grown older, I’ve realised how beneficial oysters are to us humans. And if you’ve got acne, they are very beneficial and should be incorporated into your diet!
Nothing eliminates acne more than fruit and vegetables, some of the most natural and healthy produce on the whole planet.
But not everyone likes eating whole fruit and veg. I certainly do not!
So what do you do?
Juicing is a great (and extremely delicious) way of stuffing your diet with lots of micronutrients that you are otherwise missing out on. Rather than picking at a piece of cabbage here or a piece of orange there, juicing means you can cram as many fruit and veg as you want into one single tasty, cool drink.
I used to avoid all greens when I was younger, but now I love them – and spinach is my fav of all.
Spinach is absolutely gorgeous and goes with so many different foods. It’s sweet and tender and can be tossed in with anything.
It’s also rich in the right micronutrients that kick acne’s ass.
Sugar has been linked to obesity and diabetes in recent years, but did you also know that it can cause acne? You bet it can.
Although studies are still in their tentative stages, there has been enough evidence to suggest that sugar can be the reason behind acne breakouts.
This means that cutting it out of your diet could clear your face right up.
But sugar is really bad for you in general, and particularly if you are suffering from acne right now, there can really be no better reason for eliminating this pesky villain from your diet. It literally has no positives and a whole heap of negatives. Avoid.
Cut Out Junk Foods
Like sugar, junk food has been linked to obesity and diabetes. But it has also been linked to heart disease, cancer – and skin conditions, including acne.
Lots of us eat lots of junk food – too much. Before my high school prom, I pretty much survived on junk and sugar alone. No wonder I had acne!
If you know that you eat way too much junk food, this could be the number 1 reason you’re struggling with acne right now. Cut it from your diet and see what happens.
(and don’t ever welcome it back!)
Snack On Almonds
Spent most of your life snacking on candy bars and salted peanuts? This could be why you’ve got acne.
It’s now time to trade your sugary treats for almonds. These are wonderful nuts that are great for your skin. Take a box to work with you and munch on them whenever you get hungry.
Drink More Water
Many of us don’t get enough water, but water is the elixir of life. It keeps your body hydrated, which in turn keeps you – and your skin – in tip top condition.
Water defeats acne by flushing out pesky toxins out of your system, which are responsible for acne in the first place.
Your body needs hydrating, but so does your skin.
Stay happy and healthy!
