How to get rid of smelly feet?

Smelly feet or, to give it its more technical name, bromhidrosis, is a problem that anyone can experience and it can be really embarrassing problem too. It is caused when sweat from your feet, has nowhere to escape and bacteria start to feed on the sweat and multiply in the dark, damp conditions inside your shoes. As we move on into the summer and flat shoes with no socks will come back, the problem of smelly feet will only get worse. So, to save your friends and family turning a shade of green every time you take your shoes off, read these ten great tips on how to stop your feet smelling.

1. Wash your feet thoroughly every day

The first step to stopping your feet smelling is to wash them thoroughly, twice a day, and to use an antibacterial soap. Give your feet a good soak in a foot bath, or a bowl of warm water, every morning and every night, and don’t forget to dry your feet thoroughly too, before you put on any socks and shoes.

2. Never wear the same pair of shoes two days running

Wearing the same pair of shoes, day in and day out, will mean that your shoes do not get a chance to dry out properly and the sweat and the bacteria will build up inside them. So our next tip on how to get rid of smelly feet is to wear a different pair of shoes every day and give them at least one day to breath and dry. Take off your shoes as soon as you get home too, and this will give them, and your feet, more time to breathe.

3. Exfoliate your feet regularly

If you get a build-up of dead, dry skin on your feet, then this will just add to your foot odour problem. So another useful tip on how to get rid of smelly feet is to exfoliate your feet regularly with a foot scrub, or simply some sugar and olive oil, and this will keep your feet clear of dead skin that harbour bacteria and hold on to sweat.

Shoes made out of synthetic leather are the worst for smelly feet, because they don’t allow any air to get to your feet at all. Buy real leather or cotton shoes instead, because natural materials will allow your feet to breathe. Open toe shoes and sandals are the best choice of footwear to avoid smelly feet; and walk around barefoot at home, that will help as well.

5. Vinegar foot soak

Next good tip on how to get rid of smelly feet is to do vinegar foot soak. Soaking your feet in a mixture of vinegar and water will kill the bacteria that cause smelly feet. Mix half a cup of vinegar with about six cups of warm water and soak your feet in the mixture for fifteen minutes. The acid in the vinegar will kill the bacteria that cause foot odour. When you have finished the soak, wash your feet with soap and water to take away the smell of the vinegar.

6. Always wear socks

Wearing no socks with summer flats definitely looks better, but it is also a guaranteed way to get smelly feet. Get around the problem, by wearing the very short, no-show socks, and that will help soak up the sweat and stop your feet getting smelly.

7. Wipe the insides of your shoes with an antibacterial wipe

As well as wearing different shoes each day, you can also help to stop the bacteria multiplying in your damp shoes by giving them a quick wipe around on the inside with an antibacterial wipe. So how to get rid of smelly feet? It’s easy! Each night when you take your shoes off, wipe the insides with a wipe and then leave them somewhere where they will get some air, so that they dry out properly before you wear them again.

8. Baking soda

Sodium bicarbonate or baking soda can help neutralise the PH in your sweat, which will help to kill the bacteria, thus neutralising foot odour. You can soak your feet in a warm water and baking soda foot soak, and a light sprinkling of baking soda in your socks and your shoes will also help to keep the smells away during the day too.

9. Sage

Sage is another home remedy for foot odour that is very effective. It contains tannic acid, which will reduce sweating and it also has powerful anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties too. Try sprinkling some ground, dried sage powder into your socks and shoes for daytime relief from foot odour, and you can also use sage tea for a foot odour neutralising foot bath.

10. Odour eating sprays and insoles

You can, of course, also buy over the counter foot sprays, powders and insoles that will neutralise foot odour. If you use a combination of these, it will provide a quick solution to the problem of smelly feet, but, for a long term and less expensive solution, try the tips we have given above. The commercial solutions usually do what they say they will do, but if the root cause of your problem is that you are not allowing enough air to get to your feet, then that could cause other problems such as fungal infections.
