Everyone cares about their health, but many do nothing to take care of it. Despite all the advances in medical science that has increased life expectancy, people’s diets and sedentary lifestyles are causing an epidemic of obesity and related health issues, such as diabetes. It wouldn’t be difficult to reverse this worrying trend, though; all we need to do is take back control of health with a few simple changes to our lifestyles. To start you off on a healthier way of living, here are 10 health and wellness tips that can be useful:

1. Find your 10 reasons why you want to improve your health and wellbeing

Understand why you want to improve your health. The very first thing that you need to overcome is your complacency! You feel OK right now and you can get around fine, so why bother? Actually, there are hundreds, if not thousands, of reasons why you should be taking care of yourself, and the main one being a longer and more active life. So, write down ten reasons why you want to get healthier, they won’t be that hard to come up with!

2. Create a clear-cut wellness plan

Think about how you want to look and feel, in about five or ten years from now, and plan how you are going to achieve that vision. Start to consider some achievable targets for your fitness levels and your diet, and then write down some monthly and weekly targets that you can follow to achieve this.

4. Keep a journal to keep track of your targets, achievements and goals; it will motivate you

5. Exercise for at least thirty minutes a day

Exercising gets your body moving, your blood flowing and it helps your body rid itself of some of the toxins you have put into it. Aim to get at least thirty minutes of exercise a day and, remember, exercise doesn’t have to mean going to a gym. It could be a brisk walk or playing a sport.

6. Overeating puts a strain on your heart, so try to reduce your portion sizes; remember that we eat to live and not live to eat

Don’t overeat. Eat slowly and eat only what you need. Try cooking smaller portion sizes and only eat until you feel satisfied. Overeating will not only make you put on weight, it also puts a strain on your heart.

7. Make sure you are getting enough sleep

Sleep is the body’s time to recover and make repairs, and a lack of sleep can have a major impact on your health. Try and establish a sleep pattern that ensures that you always get at least seven or eight hours of sleep a night.

8. Quit smoking and cut down on the alcohol

This is probably one of the most popular health and wellness tips. Smoking and heavy drinking are two of the biggest, preventable causes of premature death today. They both also impact on your general, day to day, health and wellbeing. Try to reduce your alcohol intake and make sure you give your body a complete rest from it sometimes. As for smoking, well, everyone knows how that will impact your health.

Don’t forget that you need a social life and relaxation time too. An inadequate balance between work and play will lead to high levels of stress, which can cause high blood pressure and heart problems. So don’t ignore your fun and play time.
