10 Genius cough and cold remedies for rapid relief

The cold season is now in full swing and, if you haven’t caught one yet, there’s still plenty of time! It’s amazing to think that there is still no cure for the common cold and all you can do is to ride it out. You can, though, make life a little more tolerable with some simple home remedies for cold and cough. Here are our top ten genius cold and cough remedies that will bring rapid relief.

1. Chicken Soup

It turns out that Grandma was right all along, a bowl of steaming hot chicken soup will make you feel better when you have a cold. It has now been scientifically proven that the ingredients contained in chicken soup can reduce inflammation and mucus, and help your body produce the anti-bodies that fight a cold or flu virus.

2. Take a break

Another one of great cough and cold remedies is simple – take a break. The symptoms of a cold may not seem enough to warrant a few days off work, but doctors do agree that resting does help your body to fight a cold. In any event, your work colleagues probably won’t thank you for you spreading your germs around at work.

3. Eat spicy foods

Eating spicy foods can help clear mucus from your system and ease chesty coughs. The substance in peppers that makes them hot is called capsaicin and that is very similar to the decongestants that are used in over-the-counter cold remedies.

4. Honey and black pepper tea

For deep, chesty coughs, a home brewed honey and black pepper tea are an age old home remedy for cold and cough, with its origins in Chinese traditional medicine. Grind a teaspoon of black pepper corns and add in two tablespoons of honey in a mug of hot water. Leave to brew for fifteen minutes, strain and then sip, for instant relief from that persistent cough.

5. Oatmeal

Oatmeal and other whole grains contain zinc and selenium, which help to make your body’s immune system work properly. A bowl of oatmeal with a spoonful of yoghurt will warm you up, make you feel better and help stop the cold virus from getting into your chest.

6. Make your own cough syrup

To make your own natural and simple home remedy for cold and cough, mix together a quarter cup of honey with a quarter cup of apple cider vinegar. Take a tablespoon of the mixture every four hours or so, and it will ease a cough and soothe a sore throat.

7. Suck on a lemon

This is another one of popular cough and cold remedies. For an instant relief from a troublesome cough, some people swear by sucking on a lemon as a remedy. Take a lemon wedge and sprinkle on a good amount salt and pepper and, if you can bear it, suck on it and it will stop the tickle straight away.

8. Drink plenty of orange juice

Vitamin C won’t prevent you catching a cold, but it will help your body rid itself of the virus faster. You should be aiming to get 500mg of Vitamin C a day, when you have a cold, and one cup of orange juice contains around 124mg.

9. Steam

Steam is another one of effective cough and cold remedies. Simple steam is a great way to loosen mucus. Just hold your head over a bowl of steaming water, with a towel draped over your head, and the steam will loosen the mucus and make you feel a lot more comfortable.

10. Make your own nasal spray

The blocked up and stuffy feeling that you get with a cold is caused when your body creates proteins called cytokines that your body releases to fight the infection. An easy way to reduce the swelling that these proteins cause is to spray your nose with a simple saline solution.
